Further to my previous message.

p.s. I just read all that I just wrote and I'm an idiot for writing it all... but what the hell, I will hit reply anyway....
I think what you wrote summarizes how a lot of people feel. But maybe step back and consider that there is a certain level of risk, vs you cannot trust anyone. Stick to forums like this one if you can, and focus on the collectors in those forums who have a good history of transactions. There are still plenty of great collectors out there to deal with.

I posted earlier of unfortunately getting scammed by an OF user 'dabbispade' in a watch trade. URL:
...
A shoutout to OF users who have been very very supportive in helping with evidence and support!! It's great to see the community come together to help. Particularly @Taddyangle for providing the key link to the PayPal account, and @Vagante for providing links to other scams!
...
Huge props to everyone who figured out so many details of this scammer! It's great that this scammer(s) are feeling the heat and hopefully will be held accountable, also great as it hopefully spreads online and in some way reduces further recurrences (maybe too optimistic...?).

What I find so bizarre, is the request for you to stop pressuring "Stefan" because he was wrongly pin-pointed. If in fact "Stefan" is innocent and Markus/Magnus/Orka is the real scammer who is messaging you, then for goodness sake, Markus/Magnus/Orka can simply go to the Police, turn himself in, explain everything and start working on restitution and dealing with the consequences of his crimes. 🤨

Everyone here feels for you, and I think we all enjoy every response you post that show him squirming uncomfortably! Keep it up and I hope it works out well for everyone affected!

Completely agree with this. And will further add that trading is not something I am particularly fond of unless it is with someone I actually know (not just a username on a website). After seeing this, I will avoid trades like the plague. To the extent a trade seems warranted I will take extra precautions and only agree to a trade with an agreed upon middle man who can receive both watches, open them and send them on their way to the respective parties.

But I think this thread drift is misplaced, so my apologies. We can start a new thread, or find an old one, concerning ways to keep the community safe when buying/selling/trading.

This thread is to serve as an update to a scam conducted by Stefan Birgir Stefansson and Magnus Sigurdsson.

Well looks like we got a new top result when searching for "stefan birgir stefansson reykjavic" on Google...

Ps: maybe both Magnus and Stefan are involved. But: they did not care about reading Magnus' name on this forum. As soon as they (or he) read the name Stefan here he showed what a great guy he is by doing everything to keep Stefans name clean. Guess he is the hotshot of those two - with a job and all... 😲

I congratulate all those on this stirling investigation and can only recommend you secure the movie rights to this asap.

Knowing all about the Hollywood, all the ingredients are here:
- an international crime
- an investigation
- multiple victims
- an email chain

I would suggest changing the scammer to a female for a broader audience, Stefanie? No, too similar, 'Melanie' - much more reliable right now.

Get Tom Hanks involved , as who doesn't love Tom and you've got yourself an original winner.

Call it "You've got Jail".

I think it should be a sequel to Catch Me If You Can; Catch Me If You Can 2 - Iceland which can also feature Tom Hanks.

Just as a counterpoint on this thread- yes, someone was violated by a Trojan Horse- a member who many of us bantered with in threads (I remember Dappispade if this is the same guy we are talking about).
But let’s not all be fearful of “outsiders” as is so common in our world today. I had a very new member from a foreign (to me) country reach out to me on a WTB thread- he had under 5 or 10 posts and I took the leap of faith after several PM exchanges and bought from him- and it went perfectly. He has gone on to be an active member of the forum.
Of course, ears up and eyes open and there are always opportunists out there, but not everyone bearing gifts is an enemy.

Thank you!!! Everyone thinks he’s an elf! He’s a gnome, they are sensitive about that.

I often travel to Wroclaw, Poland for work. They have small brass gnomes throughout the town square. They are very symbolic for Wroclaw and Poland, and a nice surprise every time I find one while there...

Criminals get caught because of two reasons:
They get sloppy and make stupid mistakes
They get greedy and gain too much attention

“On the first kill you have everything planned to the last detail, but by the tenth, you forgot where the lug wrench is” - Ted Bundy, on why serial killers get caught.

I think this is absolutely correct, and also something I've pointed out to the scammer multiple times. The name 'Magnus Sigurdsson' has been dropped many times on this forum and others. The scammer has no problem with this. The resolution has only come because Stefan's name was mentioned. So whether or not it is Magnus or Stefan or one of them or both of them, is kind of a moot point, until everyone gets their watches or money back.

P.S. in the research I've done, it seems Magnus Sigurdsson is a very common name in Iceland and that's probably why the scammer doesn't care. Stefan Birgir Stefansson is not though!
