Anybody who cares whether your watch looks a bit too big is not worth knowing..

Does that include the OP not knowing… himself? He initiated this thread concerning the right fit for his wrist. I agree: who cares what anyone else thinks about your watch and how you wear it? But if you ask people for opinions on a watch forum, it’s fair to expect them to reply.

Does it have to be a new watch? How about vintage Omega chronographs? Cases used to be below 40mm, lug to lug below 50mm.

I have 7 inch wrists and 36mm is my sweet spot 😁 I rarely buy anything over 39mm. In my opinion most modern watches look quite ridiculous because they are so big and gaudy. They do not blend in with your outfit, they stand out and draw attention. Yeah, I guess it makes sense in the modern world where watches are essentially mechanical pieces of jewelry but showy watches still bug me. Men where happy with their 33-36mm watches for decades. The world has gone mad, I tell you!

Like the old saying goes, it's not the diameter that kills you, it's the lug to lug; 47mm is way too much and 50mm is absolute madness if you have tiny wrists.

Thanks everyone for the great replies, thoughts, suggestions and images!

I had not considered vintage. The wife wants to buy me something new.

I am aware of the Rolex market, and my AD has had me on the list for years now. The list is flexible though, so the wife's interest may help.

You obviously want to try and see what looks and feels right. But with 6” wrists I would go bigger than 36mm. Rolex Explorer comes to mind. And you even have a chance of getting one of those.

My wrists are a smidge over 6in diameter so I can see where you're coming from. From my own experience, I've found that a case diameter of 36-38mm to be my "sweet spot" and a lug-to-lug distance of 47mm to be my absolute upper limit as it just fits within the outer margins of my wrist. I've included a few photos for reference and I hope it helps with your decision making:

Speedy FOIS (39.7mm diam, lug-to-lug 47mm):

Rolex GMT2 (40mm diam and 47-48mm lug-to-lug?)
Tried this on at an AD and sadly found it a bit too heavy and chunky for my tiny wrists:

Rolex Explorer 36mm which I tried on at an AD which fit me really well. Don't know the lug-to-lug distance:

Seamaster Pro 2551.80 (36mm diam, 42mm lug-to-lug):

I may get roasted for suggesting it and you do state that your preference is for new but if you like the look of the Speedmaster but think it is too big a used Speedmaster Reduced might be the ticket. Also, agree with everyone else that trying on before deciding a watch is too big is a great idea.

second that. My first serious watch was a Speedy Reduced in 1990. Wore it for close to 30 years as my main watch and it still gets wrist time (from me and also my 16yo son). Great form factor, highly reliable, super accurate. And those models from that period put an appealing spin on a tried and true watch design.

Why not consider the Speedmaster Co-axial 38mm? Lug to lug is 44.7mm and it wears well. I've had mine for a few weeks now and haven't taken it off as it's such a versatile watch. Small enough to fit under a dress cuff, automatic, 100m waterproof; a great all-rounder.

I have 6" wrists, kind of flat,

Small and flat is good. If you have a proper well-rounded wrist a speedy on a bracelet wanders all over the place.. according to a friend.

If your wife says "You look ridiculous wearing this" you should certainly take note, and consider getting a different one.. and keeping the watch.

If you want to type and general look of the Professional moonwatch, then a FOIS-type case will probably look smaller due to the lack of crown guard, or a reduced if you’re ok with it to be automatic.
Otherwise, there’s a few other option like the Racing models, or the 38mm cases with oval-looking subdials.

If you end up looking at the Speedmaster 38, don’t forget to look at the “traditional” black/white/steel version. It doesn’t have the oval sub-dials and it really is the current “Speedy Reduced” in a lot of ways.

I have smaller 6.2" wrists, and I've found that I prefer larger, 42/3mm watches (that typically push 50mm lug-to-lug) in the winter when I have thicker, long sleeve sweaters on most of the time. I typically switch to smaller watches like the Explorer II when I switch to short sleeves, though I'd have to say that the Speedy 3861 wears quite well too.

So potentially you could wear the larger '57 Speedy in the colder months, that may be something to consider.

That Speedy would look great on a nice strap, which will also make it feel a little smaller without the endlinks.

FOiS wears functionally the same as a pro, the only difference between them is the FOIS does not have crown guards which widen the case.
Yes, the dial and bezel are exactly the same dimensions... Also I felt the FOIS appeared to wear thicker due because of the straight lugs vs the Speedmaster Pro's lugs.

My wrist is 5.5in lol so it’s smaller than yours! I would not let size dictate turning down the iconic moonwatch. It looks great on you so get it. My watches have ranged from 34mm to 41mm. Life is short, wear everything and anything. I agree with another comment that the speedy will feel and look smaller with a leather strap. Maybe try that.
