Nifty! I want one. Actually would be really neat to see a combo where the compass side of the piece is a smart device with a mini magnetometer in it so it can automatically adjust for magnetic declination/deviation and charge via solar.

And a barometer to, probably gps would be nice but a step too far lol

I don’t get how any of these rudimentary compasses work from within these metal cases -> is all SS a non-ferro material, or are only special SS non-ferro?

The Porsche/IWC is titanium. I don’t know about the others

It depends on the grain structure which itself depends on the way the SS was cooled when first solidified and/or later heat treated. As with most things it's actually more complicated than that but it's 50 years since I opened a metallurgy textbook.

Try this if you want the details https://www.carpentertechnology.com/blog/magnetic-properties-of-stainless-steels

Don't need a barometer or gps if I'm not flying. Realistically, this would be a field watch. Local altimeter settings provide a sufficient datum for weather trend formulations. Gps is cheating lol

Good point, I don’t know either. But from what I can remember from Chemistry and Physics class is similar to the point @MRC makes. Will try to look for some more information as well.

Let’s not forget the not so vintage alpanist with the compass I’m part of the cool club
