Excuse me for not knowing a whole lot about Rolex, but is that a... Sea-Dweller? With the name in red text as opposed to white?

Presumably a modern take off on one of the rarest of all Rolexes, the single red Sea Dweller. There are a fair number of red Subs and double red Sea Dwellers (all vintage), but hardly any single red SDs.

I think the TRF crew calls this the SD4K, right? I like it.

I'd buy one, would be a fun first Rolex. Has a little bit of "vintage charm" due to the red.

I still think outside of Submariner snobs the SD is awkwardly proportioned to most people and the Sub is the better looking watch.

FYI the OP picture is a concept from http://rolexpassionreport.com/20205/rolex-news-for-baselworld-2017/

unrelated...
I'm digging the 60th anniversary Day Date in rose gold with the green dial from last year though, I wonder why I never saw it before today.

Nice! Wish they'd do a similar "retro" dial design with the SubC. The Seadweller is too large for my taste.

The Submariner is definitely an icon of the highest order but the modern Subs have terrible proportions compared to the SD4K other than the SD4K being 2mm thicker (still not bad at 13mm). Oversized cyclops, fat lugs and bezel make it look like roided out IMO.

Yes, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first prototype from 1967 (100 made).

I encourage all to read the great report on RPR written by the new owner of this mega rare watch, Phillip Stahl.

Interesting that you say this but the new sub C, with its thicker lugs actually looks and feel arger than the SD 4000. Maybe you were thinking of the Deep Sea version of the Sea Dweller?

will it be available w/o date?
It would be nice if Rolex came out with a no date version of the Sea Dweller. Unfortunately all iterations of the SD have a date function..

Sub Ref 116610c
40 x 13 x 47 mm Wt 155 g Lugs 20 mm

SD4K Ref 116600c
40 x 15.5 mm Wt 165 g Lugs 20 mm

DSSD Ref 116660c
44 x 17.7 mm Wt 215 g Lugs 21 mm

Check out the side profile
In comparison with the SD4K , the Sub's lugs are longer crown guards thicker , SD4K 's lugs a tad shorter but beefier & more wrist presences ,crown guards however relatively thinner 05e66faf3dc702dc27a6d0cc874b5c6a.jpg

You guys can post all the facts you want, I still think the SD is too big and I prefer the SubC.

But thanks for beating your heads against the wall. ::stirthepot::

I think Megan's post sums it all well. I guess it's more an optical illusion that the SD 4000 looks beefier. I prefer the look of the slimmer lugs on the SD but it just my taste.

Cheers
