My first PC was an IBM 5150, which came with one 5.25" floppy drive. No hard disk (disc actually) was offered. I paid for an extra floppy drive and an extra 128K of RAM. The amazing thing wasn't the "Abort, Retry, Ignore" messages (later changed to Abort, Retry, Fail") but that they were as reliable as they were. I have some 5.25" floppies that are 35 years old ( !!!) and still readable. One of these days I'm going to get around to archiving them onto something more durable and faster but that will be a two or three day project. (And of course, NOT all of them will be readable.
Abort, Retry, Ignore. And I hate to say it, but if you DO keep pressing Retry often enough sometimes you can read the entire thing.)
