I don't understand the recent Rolex SS craze/shortage. What am I missing?

What's this one going for then? It used to be the more in demand one.

When PP makes a baby poop yellow dial, yours will skyrocket I'm sure. 😉

That’s right, a lot of people searching “tiffany blue“ after the Patek came out ( and the article on JC wearing one.

hard to believe that makes these an option but, hey!! You never know.

I love the fact that people are chancing their arm with these stupid prices but if you do the wording right in the advert and make it sound too good to be true then some silly sod will pay the asking price, and once you have got one sold then.......................

This can't be dollars? It's not possible.
Your right. It’s not dollars it’s just S’s with a line through. I guess you draw them on paper and a number next to it. Oh hang on isn’t that what the govt is doing nowadays?

WoW this subject sure has long legs!
I’m wondering how much of the production has been going to China in the last few years. I know someone earlier pooped on this but it’s hard to believe Rolex doesn’t chase all those cashed up CCP cronies like almost every other western biz has done and rich Chinese are infamous for chasing whatever products are desirable to the hated Gaijing.
I bought a new sub date back in 06 for my father from the Rolex boutique in Sydney Australia discounted 25%. About 2yrs afterwards I noticed he wasn’t wearing it. He said he found it uncomfortable and I should have it. I tried wearing it but couldn’t get over the cyclops. So it’s long gone but even then the buyer a pro on-seller, offered me full retail, so they were good investments 15yrs ago. Anyways I thought I might dip back in with the sub nodate because I surf and skindive near every day (except weekends) so a rugged watch that keeps its value is appealing BUT THEN I saw the Plo-Prof and hot damn no comparison to my eyes and a new one is less than than a ten yr old Rolly. Gosh you can even get a BP Bathyscaphe for less. And that’s how you know ppl aren’t buying the watch anymore, the hype, the bragging rights, the gravy but not the watch.
Hoping for a brighter 2022

Nobody will ever tire of their neon yellow or pale blue 3 hander in 41mm case. Timeless. It will be just as fresh and on trend even six months from now.

Whilst I appreciate your irony, unfortunately this will be true.

Rolex recently opened a boutique in KOP. I visited the store sometime before Christmas and of course all of the booths were filled with "exhibition" watches. They also had an entire wall filled with pre-owned rolex. Facetiously I asked how much a new sub cost. The representative told me ~$8k (I believe it was 8,100 at the time) however that they did not have any available. He informed me that they did however have one 2019 preowned submariner available if I was interested. When I asked him how much that preowned sub was he said $15,500 ... 🤦. To me, it appears that Rolex seems just fine playing the game.

If the market price for a pre-owned Sub is around $15K, why would a Boutique sell it for anything less?

not saying they should or shouldn't. Just thought the comment by the employee that a new one is 8k and a used one is 15k in the same breathe is amusing. That's all.

A Rolex boutique selling pre-owned? That doesn’t square

Did this “boutique” also sell other brands?

The set up was a little weird. Its in the old location of where the Tourneau store use to be I believe. I have only been to that mall a handful of times. One of the rooms was only Rolex and other store fronts/rooms that adjoined to it sold other brands so I guess it would classify as an AD not a boutique but the layout made it seem like they were separate stores if that makes sense. Here is the link to the store that I found: https://www.rolex.com/en-us/rolex-dealers/bucherer1888/rswi_4168-kingofprussia-unitedstates.html

this makes more sense

though, even with an AD, I’m still a bit surprised that they sell used Rolex under the same roof as their new sales; this could be just a foggy brain of mine somehow misremembering that I’ve seen this a dozen times, but I otherwise have the possible misconception that Rolex disallowed this

Several do, Tappers does to. AD's need now to create an entire separate area only for Rolex if they want the license. That's why some stores are not carrying the license anymore because it forces them to give precious real estate and counter space only to Rolex for, basically, advertising. They need dedicated attendants and space. But, Tourneau and tappers etc are still the owners of the branch and they do sell other brands and pre-owned units.

One of these stores tried to buy my Daytona from me when I came in asking for something else. It's stupid.

I do find it amusing as well that we are at a point where the same store will say -"this "new" is 8g, second market it's 15G. - Oh easy choice!! I'll take the new one!!!- No, you can't.

Yes, I imagined it had to be a Tourneau-like shop if at all; searching my very fallible memory I couldn’t remember ever seeing used Rolex in a Tourneau, but then again I was probably only ignoring their existence.

I would guess fewer and fewer brick-and-mortar sales shops will be carrying both new and used Rolex, for a mixture of both the sales-side reason you mention (Rolex requiring significant dedicated space, etc.) as well as the Rolex-side agenda (seemingly, moving toward direct-to-consumer integration). Of course, these two pressures are surely linked: Rolex demanding more of ADs because the Rolex end game is to avoid ADs, anyway; though for now, if an AD will accept Rolex’s terms, then Rolex will tolerate the middleman.

My local AD has a rather large dedicated Rolex space, and the local managers at least seem attracted to the idea of doing away with Rolex, if they could. I assume Rolex feels similarly about my AD.
