I don't understand the recent Rolex SS craze/shortage. What am I missing?

To be honest they are very nice watches. I know many people don’t like them, the rose gold is quite nice. The white gold is nice, but you it looks like steel. The issue is for that price whether you can add some more money and get a Patek Calatrava! I would however think that the Cellini movement is very sturdy. If I had to buy a Rolex and money is no issue I would be happy with the Celini. They are easy to get at wire but discount.
Apologies I realised now you are talking of 5240 and 5241 which are not new. They are nice, at 35mm I don’t know need to try it first. The new ones are 39mm.

yes old / out of production, 35mm and 38mm, platinum, never been popular i guess, so far no way to try yet
looks similar to seamaster 1948 in photos

i like those newer cellini you said as well but that 5240 and 5241 has been slowly biting me for a while

actually cellini line is the only rolex i like in the current production, believe overall quality is almost pp /vc territory
i have no taste for >40mm oyster cases, perhaps i do not like all new hot sport rolex watches

Funnily enough the AD i went to specializes in high end jewelry for example, i know covid hit everyone hard and i was trying to see what else they had so i asked a bunch of questions about all sorts of jewelry, there was a case in the back that legit said everything inside was 40% off but everywhere else had markings that had tags that read “final sale, no special discounts, or refunds accepted”. The reviews on google were all bad, especially from rolex fanboys, a couple of recent fanboys. lolol

I was testing waters to be honest, I am usually an Omega fan used to seeing them in person at a Boutique, although I have an older Rolex, I just find this brand exclusivity from a Rolex purchase “AD” all too hilarious since I’m a casual buyer for example. With that said I am loyal to a brand to an extent I am meaning to either fly to a Duty free zone In Panama or head to a retail “Rolex” store outside the states or check them out in Vegas or something to see what’s really up but nothing surprises me anymore per se I guess

For what they are, they are quite expensive. I guess not really different from the Sport and other Oyster models in reality, but people seem more tolerant of "high price for what you get" when it can be resold for as much or more than you paid for it. You can't do that with a Cellini...

BTW, yesterday I saw my Rolex AD and asked about the dummy watches.

She reported they were on the way, unfortunately - and that they were all very annoyed by the prospect. Namely:

(1) they’d now have to spend a bunch of time “showing” dummy watches which they can’t even offer units for sale, and

(2) the Rolex case brings in the vast majority of watch-know-nothings just looking to poke around or take try-on pictures for IG

In all, I hadn’t thought about the possibly silly burden these dummy units put on the ADs

I’m paywalled out of the article, but there’s no doubt China or China-adjacent countries have been the largest consumer in the segment for some time (perhaps cooled by more recent austerity measures).

what was/is the gist of the paywalled article?
Surprised you were paywalled. The article was recommended to me by Google on my phone. Basically, the article was just saying that with the cooling of the property market in China wealthy Chinese have been looking at other ways to invest their money. Luxury watches are one area. One attraction is that they are also a more portable asset than property or cash if you're trying to flee the country. There are laws that limit how much cash you can carry out or wire transfer. But a customs officer may not notice the Rolex or Patek on your wrist, or realize how much it's worth.

The first dealer is a profit maximiser that’s for sure. He wants $578k for a Rolex OP as well as an additional $161 for shipping. Wonder if he’d throw that in for free if I meet his asking?

What's this one going for then? It used to be the more in demand one.
