How many watches is too many?

I have 6 watches that I consider expensive like Tudor BB58 & FOIS for example. Then I have tier two that includes 8 Seiko Turtles and three Seiko 5's and finally 10 other lesser known or less valuable (sticker price) watch's. I have sold two Breitling's, a JLC MUT, Rolex OP39, Tudor Pelagos, Christopher Ward amongst others in the last 18 months as I lusted after them, purchased them and thought not for me while only adding my BB58.

My wife has 14 watches in her collection and a longer list of "Next Watch" than I have. She considers every watch prior to purchase and keeps them all, unlike me.

If I am being brutally honest, I would only need my Speedy as I wear it so much, especially these days for unexplained reasons. The only exception to that is when I am travelling to one of my exotic customers, then it's tier two or three watches.

An individual with a developing addiction to collecting watches here and I must say, these responses are uplifting 😁 haha!

“One a year” is my simple rule.
10 years of collecting. Exactly 21 watches.

In my profession, we adhere strictly to rules and policies to keep us true and honest.

30.

I was reading a blog about fountain pens, and some chap there had 250, I believe. That's a lot.

My collection varies, as I tire of watches and either don't enjoy wearing them or just never wear it (for whatever reason) then it gets flipped and I scratch some other itch.

I was thinking just yesterday, if I had to sell them all but one, which would I keep, and it didn't take long to decide that it would be the Speedy, although there are times when I wish it had a date, but I have a phone and Alexa and a computer and somewhere a calendar, so I can usually figure that out.

So, the correct answer is: as many as it takes.

But yes, sell the Tin TIn if it remains unworn.

I would keep the GMT if I had to sell it all. It’s the one that started this madness all those years ago.

Great posts, information and feedback.
I made my first move on the watch quantity and sold one of my other brand watches, I advertised on Facebook market and a guy reached out to me and met me in my local bank yesterday to do the transition. So one watch down.
I have decided to let the Tin Tin go next, I will have to investigate the best place to advertise, take some photos and see what I get offered for it.
Thanks all

I love this thread. Clearly there is a right question to your question.

So...

You NEED to have one watch a week, as it's easy to get bored and there are four seasons. One could argue that you could start with one watch for each season, then month, but ultimately, it's clear to everyone that we all need one per week. So that's 52.

Then...

There's Christmas or Eid or Hanukkah or the founding of Tesla or whatever God you believe in, and that's a special occasion requiring the gold one to come out of it's box, then your birthday, your wife/husband's birthday, wedding anniversary, divorce anniversary, your parents' birthdays, grandparents' birthdays, and it's absolutely clear that these occasions requires one of the special ones to come out (Limited Edition AT LEAST) so taking into account the average divorce rate, number of parents, average life expectation of grandparents, your age, etc. that means you'll definitely, without question, need another 26 watches to cover those days, so that's 78.

Then...

Of course, the kid's birthdays, bar mitzvahs, christenings, Aqiqah, etc. so another 8 or so for those key life experiences, making 86.

You clearly can't be expected to wear your 105.012-65 or 2998 on a day out with the kids to the roller-coaster park, or sky-diving, on the track-day at Silverstone/Laguna Seca/Sochi Autodrome/Yaz Island, deep-sea diving or to Space (oh, actually you can, forget that one) so you'll need an extra 7 nice, new, under-warranty, speedies for those days out, so that takes you to 93.

Then...

There's OBVIOUSLY the really precious ones, like the old ones your great-grandparents passed down, or the one with the dodgy hands or the case back falling off that you can't actually wear but you have to keep. There's probably another 5 of those, so 98.

Then...

There's clearly going to be one or two that are at being serviced, so 100.

That's clear then. You need 100. Anything else would be foolish.

Oh yes, and you can sell your TinTin to me, as I've now worked out I haven't got enough yet.

Any thoughts on a 'daily wear' watch? Maybe one for each weekday?

That wasn’t my intention, I have no clue on value etc and I have to prepare myself for the sale it might take a while. Haha

Great post, And love your logic! the more I read these posts I’ve almost convinced myself to buy more rather than downsize. I even started thinking I could get two watches for the same price of the tin tin, so I started looking around online. Haha.

My view - les is more. I’ve had the 10+ watches and for me it was a waste of time. I much prefer less choice and to get 2 or 3 lovely ones instead.

my sweet spot is 3 nice watches. They all get good time. I have a couple of seiko and a g shock for the rough stuff.

but hey - everyone’s views vary on this. Me, I’d rather have 2 or 3 special watches

That is a bloody good point. I don’t actually know. Just less than 4. Is that ok? 😜

Sure, that's actually the question the thread title is asking. Four is too many.
