·I visited an OB a couple weeks ago and unsuccessfully begged for a half hour to get on the list. I explained my appreciation for the history of Speedmasters, my love of manual wind chronographs with a lateral clutch, my love of space history, etc. The manager was very clear, "I only get a couple a year, and they're going to customers that have a massive buying history at my store, those customers have purchased $50,000 or more." I don't blame him, those customers earned it; but it's lame to not even add a person to a list. I'm on another list at an OB in a different state, but last I checked I was something like number 60 and will never make my way up.
You and I should both just go grey market and get it in two days. It's not that much of a premium, considering how amazingly rare it is to get it at a boutique. I'm just not sure which grey market dealers are trustworthy. I hate the idea of sending five figures over the internet for a used watch I can't inspect in person first. Anybody have experience with LuxuryBazaar or WatchBox or BobsWatches? Those guys are constantly making YouTube videos, so they are kinda top of mind.
Seems that even OBs operate differently in various countries/regions.
In HK you can get on the list with or without purchase history. The SA told me did put my name in the list a couple years ago. When asked (at that time) how long I'm expected to wait, the SA did told me that the 321 will usually go to the higher spend customers (similar to the US50k quoted above).
The proof that I was indeed being registered on the list is because the SA did reach out to me end of last year that my 321 is available.
As to going grey/buying at a premium - in HK I saw a listing that sells a 2023 one even lower than the retail. I am not going to deny that I felt for a sec that I should've purchased from this listing instead of the OB. So for those who still want to get one officially from the OB - just wait out if you are not in a hurry.
