How come people are not worried about radium lumes flaking and the dust escaping the case?

Most vintage omegas with radium lumes are not waterproof. That means the seal isn't air tight. This means stuff can get into the watch... and stuff can get out.

Radium lumes have degraded and are often very fragile. It's not uncommon for the lume to dislodge from just wearing.

Therefore, people warn others of opening the caseback of a radium dialed watch. That seems to be a valid concern accepted by most people here.

But if that's true, how does the fact that the dust will flow in and out of the watch due to the lack of air tight seal not concern people?

You have a point.
Funny how all the old people that owned these watches in the 1940s are mostly dead now 馃槙

Your reading comprehension must be so low if you can not grasp that I'm asking a very specific question that hasn't been addressed.

I'm not talking about the dangers of radium dials in general. I'm asking about the possibility of the radium dust escaping the watch case without ever being opened due to the lack of an airtight seal.

All I've read is how they are safe as long as it's closed but might be dangerous if opened. And I'm bringing up the point that if the latter is true, then the watch might be dangerous EVEN if they remain closed because these cases are hardly dustproof. Radium dust will leak out. I'm asking for people's opinion on this specific matter.

Why are you not worried about the radon that is leaching out of every crack in the ground and rocks lying around. Or are you just a selective worry wort that hasn鈥檛 seen the big picture yet.

Did you know fruit and vegetables are often gamma irradiated at 5k grey to stop insects ( mostly in the US though )

It gets worse.

I guess also doing a search on OF and seeing several in-depth threads discussing the topic was a bit too much effort for the OP. OF collectively refuses to respond to his very serious and legitimate questions because, well, because they've been discussed in excruciating detail several times before.

Ouch.
I think a thread on the topic of personal gratification working in the sciences sounds like a much more interesting read.

And since this thread is woefully lacking pictures- here鈥檚 enough radium to make your skin crawl- and yes, I wear them regularly, as did the previous owners.

You can hear the sirens going off with this one!

@JwRosenthal Do you have any idea how much second hand exposure you just gave my eyes?!?

On the other hand, thanks for sharing a great vintage lineup, so all is forgiven! 馃槈

Also if you live in a house built before 1969- willing to bet it鈥檚 loaded with lead paint and asbestos, lead used for the flux in the pipes and you better not cook in aluminum pots and pans, nor Teflon coated. Also watch out for carbon monoxide from household gas appliances and don鈥檛 walk anywhere near a street for the emissions from cars and busses will also do you in.

I visited a friend a couple of years ago to help him with some car repairs. We were in the garage, and the overhead door was closed because it was winter time. During my time there that afternoon I was exposed to several seemingly uncontrolled releases of methane gas. I am pretty sure that exposure took a couple of days off my expected remaining life span.

I get that kind of exposure nightly in bed- particularly if there was a dairy heavy dinner involved.

Yes but was the farmer who milked the cow that your cheese was derived from wearing a radium dial watch? Those farts could could very well be radioactive.
