How come people rarely talk about the new Constellation Globemaster

    Saw a review of the new Constellation Globemaster. Seems to be a pretty sick watch. Granted it's not as influential and classic as the vintage 50s and 60s Connie, I think it's still an awesome watch in terms of design and movement. Anyone had any experience with the new Globemaster?

    A friend of mine has it. It's a very nice watch, elegantly styled, and modern proportioned. It's a little larger than the classic Connies but a very nice watch, overall.

    If you like it, there's nothing wrong with it. Since most folks on OF prefer vintage, I think they may be looking at other watches in that price range.

    I think it misses appeal due to some serious design ‘flaws’ (in my opinion):

    - too massive for a subtle, understated dress piece;
    - dial lies way too deep in the case, to house the flat sapphire, vintage appeal has a dial on top and a bubble plexi;
    - plain case design;
    - piepan dial seems to be missing sharpness and depth.

    Missed opportunity.

    I would concur with several points above, but not all.

    The GM could certainly benefit from losing some thickness from the case and transferring that height to an LE Railmaster type domed crystal. This would create the illusion of a thinner overall watch even if the actual dimensions were identical.

    Loosing a little weight also wouldn’t hurt. The easiest way to do that would be to ditch the sapphire display back. The movement is nice but it’s not exactly Glashütte Original caliber 49-13 nice, so no great loss.

    The crystal isn’t flat, it’s slightly domed but nowhere near as pronounced as on the RM, which, as you point out gives the impression of the GM dial sitting low in the case. This leaves a lot of blank rehaut causing some commentators to describe the GM as looking like an ashtray.

    I rather like the blue GM dial as is, but like many modern Omegas it could certainly benefit from some sort of slight step and a somewhat sharper transition between the center and the angled „pie pan“ facets.

    These are, in my opinion, rather good points as it means there is some scope for a Gen2 Globemaster, maybe.

    Like its brother better. Smooth bezel vs the one that reminds all of a Rolex; love a manual wind; cool solid gold balance bridge; and if you get the vitreous enamel dial, you can scratch that Patek ref 2526 itch (a little...). At 40mm, still a little large for my tastes:

    In my opinion the problem with all/the majority of new designs from Omega is that before they have even hit the market, or there after had the chance to settle into the minds of modern Omega buyers and to become a 'wanted watch', there are already another 50 new designs/limited editions being pushed out of the door.

    This saturating of the market with constant multiple re-designs of the same watches ( think for example of all the completely different modern versions of the Railmaster ) coupled with loads of new model releases really weakens Omega's standing IMO and leaves an interesting watch like the Globemaster without a clear identity for the long term, it's just 'another' new Omega model soon to be left on the hype sidelines by today's hot new item.

    I agree with you, but I'm guessing they do it because they have to. A lot of brands are guilty of the same practice, and those that don't run the risk of being marginalized.

    :thumbsup: What he said.
    As for the Tresor, nice idea but too expensive and too large in diameter for my taste. And what were they thinking of with the black date background?

    I was really excited when it came out from a design and I loved the movement. I immediately short listed it but when I saw it at the OB I was underwhelmed. It was a little too large and the proportions were a little bit off.

    Well if you own a globe master you know the club rules.

    The first rule of globemaster club is you wear it your first night.

    The second rule of globemaster club is you don’t talk about globemaster club.

    The third rule of globemaster club is you don’t talk about globemaster club.

    I rarely talk about any new watch. There are usually 2 or 3 vintages watches I’d rather buy for the same price.

    What's the first rule of the proof-reading club? :)

    If you can still read the proof level, you haven’t drunk enough?

    For me it's the fluted bezel that bothers me. So not original. Way to steal Datejust design.

    I’m not sure this is completely accurate, as the c-case Connies also had this type of fluted bezel.
