Here is an old photo (2005 or 2006 probably) I came across recently of Piper waiting in a sit-stay for me to cross Devil's Causeway, drop my pack, and return to bring her across. IIRC, I escorted all three dogs across one at a time, just because the exposure made me so nervous. If one of them had fallen, I'm not sure there was much I could have done.

A sad day yesterday. We had to say 'goodbye' to our Old Lady. She suffered a stroke, and could no longer stand.

We took her to the Vet, and gave her fuss until it was over. 13 years, 3 months, and seven days. A most wonderful companion, who had a working dogs' dream life. I was privileged to have been her partner.

This was taken yesterday morning. I can see in her look, she knew.

This corner of OF is for me more enjoyable than any watch conquest….the ups and downs as we go through the stories of the pets, or really partners, that our fellow members experience is the anchor of reality. This community feels the love and the loss each time and is better for it.

my sincere condolences Steve.

I'm so sorry, Steve. I know you gave her a great long life, and I also know that doesn't make it any easier.

Au contraire, Dan, when I look back, Isa and I, had a great life together, and it does help me. When working a dog, a very close bond is needed, to work well together. We had that, and it cannot be explained. It just happens.
Let me give an example.

I was shooting Driven Pheasants. My wife was in the Beating line,( 8/10 others ),working Isa, pushing birds out of the wood, towards the line of Guns. The Beaters were, maybe, halfway through the wood, when Isa came out, and ran straight to me, and sat at my side. Despite my wife blowing the recall whistle, Isa did not leave my side. How on earth did she know that I was there? But, she did know, and was determined to be with me.

I miss her now, and always will, but I am so grateful that we had out time together.

So sad and I totally understand how you must be feeling, she will obviously never be forgotten and I am sure she will often come up in conversation for many many years to come.

I'm so sorry, sir. My sincere condolences. Our time with these fur babies always feels too short.
