Rabbits, house cats in the neighborhood and 11 tasty dogs at my house

I think people forget how bad vermin plagues could get in the olden day, leading to sickness and famine. Then we got wedded to pesticides and poisons which bring their own issues long term for the environment. There were a lot of reasons why the Egyptians worshiped cats and sailors like a cat on board.[/QUOTE]
Ah, thanks @Omegafanman i was watching a documentary about the Vikings discovering North America pre Columbus and bringing with them “red cats”. They just touched on the subject but mentioned they were viewed as good luck. I just poked around a little online to gather a bit more info seems like it could become a major study in itself

Vikings Helped Cats Conquer the World
By Amy Tikkanen
While Vikings don’t exactly have a reputation for being cuddly, their travel companions do. Hoping to shed some light on the early history of cats, in 2016 researchers reported the results of a study in which they sequenced the DNA of 209 felines, the remains of which had been found at various archaeological sites, dating from 15,000 to 2,700 years ago. What they discovered was that cats expanded geographically in two waves.

During the first wave, the feline critters traveled from the Middle East to the eastern Mediterranean, an area known for its fertile lands. This finding supports the long-held belief that farmers—in desperate need of rodent control—encouraged the spread of cats. The next wave—which occurred thousands of years later—started in ancient Egypt, where cats were worshipped, and moved to Africa and Eurasia via seafarers. Researchers notably found that the DNA from an Egyptian cat matched that of a feline found at a Viking site in Germany. It is believed that Vikings—along with other mariners—took cats on ships in order to control rats and mice. These findings are not surprising, given the presence of cats in Norse mythology. The goddess Freyja—who was in charge of love, fertility, battle, and death—traveled in a chariot pulled by two large cats.

Based on Instagram today, cats were probably popular entertainment on long voyages.

Sailors could also eat them in a pinch, although they'd eat the dogs first.

I don’t know if you read “undaunted courage” it’s about the Lewis and Clark expedition but in it they said dog was one expeditions favorite food. I imagine if you get hungry enough anything will taste pretty good.

Yep. They took a Newfoundland with them. I think it's name was Sailor. I used to have 2 Chesapeake bay retrievers, which were supposedly bred out of newfies. (Chessies are best dog ever, provided you are willing to work them.)

The Newfoundland was a popular dog in the Victorian era. It was known for saving sailors, who typically did not know how to swim. They were on board for luck, plus eating in case of ship wreck.

My old dogs Guinness and Grizzly, back when we lived in Maryland. Still miss them

Thanks for the info @Walrus. I was thinking old English sailing ships and Egyptian mummies, not vikings. Given old boy is part Norwegian forest cat that is interesting. The cat photo in your link also struck a chord, Old boy had a brother who we lost at 10, and 7 years on it is still a bit raw. He was super bright and more independent, a passive top cat. I have tons of photos of them but somehow can never look at them… but have dug some up tonight. . Maybe he was a little Viking and is living it up in Valhalla ;0).

Lovely pics.
Had some good holidays there with my mum and dad some 50 years ago.
I remember it being the Midge capital of the UK too.

Oh don't mention the dreaded midge 😡

Still not too much snow in the mountains, so we did some hiking over the Thanksgiving holiday. Max will be happy when the skis come out.

My son was over with his young German shepherd Samatha. Linguini was dumbfounded yet after an hour or so, adapted quite well.

He puffs up pretty well!

A little rest is in order after all the excitement!

Cheers!

Last evening I was admitted to hospital and despite the problems I was going through my main concern was for my wife and daughters and to be honest my four legged pals never left my mind.
Thankfully I am now back home and the puppy has not left my side and has decided to sleep beside me 🥰
I am popping pills but this little fella is doing so much for me,
