Thanks much @Omegafanman i know you mean that from the heart. I’m not gonna let this get me as you know sooper doopers story she was supposed to be dead at 17 she’s coming up on 25 so who knows. Unfortunately hairy got two pretty serious diagnoses now and she means a lot to me since she is a family cat I rescued but let’s say we are coming up on the end, why be miserable now when she isn’t exhibiting any suffering? The time will come for that but like us humans we should enjoy life while we are here and not yet showing sins of illness.
Yea I am pretty much treating her like a baby at this point and got yelled at by my wife for serving hairy breakfast in bed after the initial bad news and probably my talk of a crib and stroller was a bit overboard but I’ll spend the money on treatments for now as she is pretty much still acting normal I was just warned things could turn rabidly so I’ll be watching her and making the best calls I can.
Wow she certainly is holding up well at that age.
I used to have a cat that just turned up one day and wouldn't leave no matter how hard I tried to convince him other wise, and believe me I tried and not in a kind way. Due to his introduction to our family he never got a name, just cat or if we were more descriptive Black Cat. 22 years later he finally passed away with a brain tumor, in perfect health apart from that, I estimate his age would have been between 26 to 28 years old as he was a fully grown mature cat on arrival. His most endearing feature was his meanness, beating up other cats and dogs, he once chased a family members 5 pig dogs away and they refused to return to the property, had to be put back in the truck! On numerous occasions I found him actively stalking dogs, crossing the road to attack them, size did not matter. If you upset him in the morning he would be angry with you the whole day and often till the next. He was mean! But sorely missed by me upon his death.
The current cat is a rescued cat, rescued from a Maine Coon breeding operation, in a cage her entire life. The business came to a sad end and many of the cats had to be put down due to starvation. They managed to re-home the remaining cats (about 8 ) but this one was so messed up that 4 different families couldn't deal with her. She was supplied with a cage and the instruction that she knew no other way to live and would never change. No way was that going to happen, the day she arrived she never again was put in a cage, took about 2 years before normalised but even so she won't ever go to a room with out an escape plan and you can never close a door or its panic time. She will never allow any one near her and can never be picked up except by me but only if I fool her and am very quick.
She spends all the daylight hours outside, winter and summer, only coming inside late at night when everyone else but me has gone to bed to sit next to me, purring away like she is a normal cat, which she definitely is not lol
I have had a few Maine Coons in the past and I highly recommend them.
Ooh I love the Maine coon breed, can I ask how big yours is? I see them get up to some crazy weights. Before I got hairy I was actually seeking one but the two breeders in my area had a long wait list. Plus I always say I’m gonna get a purebred cat but then someone approaches me with a box full of kittens, holds one up and it’s game over for me. I think the record for a “old cat” is 36 years old. So sooper being 25 isn’t that crazy but tbh it seems around 12-15 years old that damn leukemia takes them. The fact that sooper dooper has had leukemia for 8 years is unusual for a cat (in my limited knowledge)
The doors work well for the new cat we got as kittens. never worked when we move d in with our then 12 year old cat, had to tape them open.
At the beginning of December this one got a diagnosis of terminal kidney failure, and told to prepare to lose her by January. She is almost 15 and we lost her brother to a cancer a year ago. She is still around but has lost about 4 lbs since then....she has her good days ripping around, and others where we are worried that she won't make it to tomorrow. Still seems pretty happy most of the time and is still taking time to go out in the back of the house to get the odd mouse....
Our vet just does a suprapubic needle tap if she wants urine.....I am trying to imagine stealing pee from this one any other way, it's a nightmare to give her any meds if she doesn't want to take them.

Did you notice increased water intake and bathroom use prior to the diagnoses? Do you mind if I ask what your treating kitty with. My vet said the only thing you can really do is dietary things although there may be some meds involved. I’m currently waiting for the urinalysis results to come in so we can start some sort of treatment which will of course vary depending on what issues they narrow down.
Odd this all started from me witnessing her having a severe seizure but since thus far it was an isolated event and diagnosis can take a very long time the kidney issue had become the primary concern as they can deteriorate so rapidly and abilities to treat are limited.
All started with vomiting all over the place….refusing to drink at all when previously was a good drinker. She got an anti-emetic from the vet and was comatose for a few days. After a few sleepless nights for us she returned to relatively normal. Losing weight slowly and not eating as well but combination of wet and dry food seems as good as she wants. Every few weeks she goes completely off all food and refuses her arthritis pills but still drinks well. After a couple of days routine is back. She is dwindling…but very slowly.
Good luck with her tests.
WORDLE SPOILER: for those of you who do this word puzzle, today’s answer is Hairy, hopefully a good omen for you @Walrus
