Sad news I am afraid, my old pal passed away peacefully in his bed this afternoon.

As a family we have been so fortunate to enjoy his company over many years and he will always be in our memory.

So sad to read this as all our pets are integral members of our family.

He had a happy life, and that is the best you could have offered him, and he leaves you with surely great memories to cherish.

Ok thank god hairy back. Yesterday she had a seizure that went on for 4 minutes. She then went completely limp and unresponsive. About three minutes of that then she slowly regained awareness but got up and walked in circles doing a weird meow. A couple of minutes of that then she realized I was there. I filmed the event (won’t post that it’s not pleasant) because I had that happen to sooper dooper and the vet told me to film it if it happens again or they don’t have enough info to diagnose.
So the good news is she is home. The bad news is after the vet watching the video and seeing all the left hand turns hairy made it implies a “lesion” on that side of the brain. If that is the case there is nothing I can do. So I gotta fill some anti seizure meds at the human pharmacy and try to give hairy pills “it is easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle” than Give a cat pill. And don’t give me that BS about breaking it up in their food because it’s extended release you can’t break it and they just eat around it anyway.
So now I got a 24 year old cat with every ailment you can imagine and unknown age hairy having seizures. Wtf it’s becoming a third job pets are supposed to be fun.

PS the female vet techs gave hairy a nice grooming and were having a good laugh and how crazy her fur is. The vet actually needed to break up the techs as they were giving hairy the “full princess spa treatment”

Ok I don’t want to go on forever with this but the vet I dealt with today was pretty cool. He comes outside to talk to you and he spent a good amount of time with me. I had a Beatles hat on and he is a big Beatles fan so that tends to break some ice. He told me when he first picked hairy up he felt the lumps on her underside breast area and immediately thought it was breast cancer. He said he put her down and had his assistant investigate cause he couldn’t handle it he told 20 people this week there pet was pretty much dead and he couldn’t handle another one today. Fortunately it was just the hair Matt’s which I do cut off but when they are real close to her skin I can’t do it as I knick her skin which she hates of course. I need to get an electric shaver I guess.

Anyway I found it interesting as he told me he ends up in tears at the end of the day telling people the bad news and having to put pets down. He got his license in Canada and finished it up here in the US. Very nice guy it was interesting hearing him explain how the job impacts him I just kind of thought it becomes matter of fact to them, definitely not the case with this guy.

Kind of a sad morning reading what has happened since the last look in this thread…..and my heart goes out to each of you. One of ours left us after a quick and terrible bout with a lung cancer almost one year ago. A hard couple of months but we added a couple of kittens from the rescue group that my daughter volunteers with. Merlin was a huge part of our family and missed terribly by all of us, so for Chistmas we (Mrs. P and me) were gifted by our kids with a perpetual title to one of the “cells” at the rescue shelter named for him. We get updates whenever there is a new resident.

And my favourite picture of our boy

@Alpha.....Truly sorry to hear about your loss. I am not a dog person, but it felt like we all knew him. Lately, I have been telling my 10 year old cat, the real McKinley, that he needs to out live me, as I don't ever want a new cat. Our pets really are our children and our family and give us 100% of their best, unlike our fellow man. McKinley and I both extend our sympathies at this difficult time.

McK

Old boy gave the cat TV selection his seal of approval. It is very so sad losing a pet. They are a big part of the family and very special to have that close bond with another species. As he gets older we value the time with him more and he is getting some extra fuss this weekend (if indeed that is possible :0)

I think most vets get into it because they love animals. Having to put them down all the time can't be easy, and there are times when the decision isn't based on medicine, but on money. I'm sure those are the toughest. My wife wanted to be a vet, but decided that she couldn't deal with having to put animals down...

Not sure about the US, but there is a shortage of vets here in Canada, and the pandemic where everyone seems to have bought a pet (many from places where the animals have health issues) has caused a large strain on the vets here. I know our primary care vet is not taking on new animals, and the specialists we have used are always swamped.

It’s probably more just the past couple years dealing with vets has been a much more impersonal thing here. When I had to put Baxter down I had to leave his half dead body in the breezeway of the vet then they call you for payment while you stand outside freaking out it was pretty tough dealing with the vets during Covid. This is the first time I talked to one face to face in two years.
It was usually packed as well. We have one vet in my town and the customers were getting pissed off at the whole process/long wait, I noticed some people getting down right nasty so I’m sure that played a part in vets being a little more “robotic” or even snappy with people. I encountered it myself even though I never got nasty I just waited outside for the two hours or whatever as a knew getting nasty was not going to improve the process.

I guess I had never talked to a vet about that part of the job and how it impacts them. I’m honestly not sure about a shortage of vets in the US. In may be as I’ve read there are a shortage of vet schools and long backlogs to go attend. I may have to bring hairy to a “cat neurologist” although perhaps the vet meant a “pet or animal neurologist” but if she does have a brain tumor they usually tell you if the animal is over a certain age a surgery doesn’t make sense as the chances of survival are drastically reduced.

It really is shocking how fast these animals can go down hill once you get an initial diagnosis but I think everyone in this thread has commented this is the one “bad” part of pet care taking and I think we are all at an age when we have been through it at least once.

You do as much as you can until it’s no longer prudent to do so and then make what you hope is the best decision. I know I have chosen to keep treating longer than I should have and I may have inadvertently increased the animals suffering I don’t want to repeat that mistake but it is always a tough call.
