That seemed to be at least a medium-size dog, so it's unlikely that just stepping on its paw would cause serious damage. I can't count the number of times that I have accidentally stepped on my dogs' paws as they got underfoot.

Thank you @Dan S and @Omegafanman for the replies. He is a 10 year old doggo who weighs 70 pounds (so 10 more pounds than the dog I had) diagnosed this month with Lyme disease by a vet who dispensed the 300 dollar course of medication along with a physical and well being check up.
I often need to get involved in pet care for people with extremely low income and it is a torturous affair as so many agencies that did so closed up shop during Covid and the pets mean so much to these people I’ve been able to pull a few rabbits out of hats but damn it takes a lot of time. So I think I almost paranoid about it at this point.

But yeah I stopped by today to check on doggo he seems ok. I’m surprised for a dog of his weight and age how good his hips are. Gets up and down really quickly. I would love to get a dog again but I’m not home enough plus hairy the cat would never forgive me and I’m pretty sure hairy is going to live to 50 or some crazy number just to spite me. I have no clue how old hairy is as she was a rescue, the vet said “not even 10 judging by her teeth”. I know hairy is older than 10 I have no clue what the hell hairy is doing to keep her teeth so nice to fool the vet. She probably figured out how to brush and floss when I’m not home.

So I just gotta chill a bit regarding other peoples pets and accept you can only do so much despite the desire to do more. I notice now that whimpering the dog was doing is just part excitement of having a visitor over. It is mostly a blessing to love animals and pets but there a a small part of curse to it which we just gotta accept. I’m am such a friggin softy it’s pathetic.

Sad news I am afraid, my old pal passed away peacefully in his bed this afternoon.

As a family we have been so fortunate to enjoy his company over many years and he will always be in our memory.

Very sorry to hear that. At least he was at home with you all and peaceful, but a hard sad time all the same I know.

Wow. I just kinda thought he’d be like sooper dooper and hang around despite the odds. This news really bums me out although he is across many miles of water I kinda feel like a patted the old fella. Really enjoyed all your pics of him glamping and all that. That really kind of hits me and I know you must really be feeling the loss. My best to you sad news indeed but you gave him a great life you have no regrets in that department. Stay well, soon enough you will just remember the good times but for now it’s the season to grieve and there is no shame in that.

peace and all good things,
Jim

I'm so sorry. I know he has had his ups and downs recently, and I've been dreading this day. He had a long life, and a good life right up to the end. Our little community here will not be the same without him.

@Alpha i hope it’s ok to dedicated this song to you and doggo. Ten years ago I put my Shepard down the vet gave me three days to bring her home and have two whole days to say goodbye. She used to love to sit in my room when I played guitar this was all I played for two days with her just resting on the floor next to me. It’s very weird how I can’t remember what I did Monday but those last days with her are burned in my brain. It’s been a decade and I still miss her, it’s also weird her and sooper dooper were buddies and sooper is still around.
