We have travelled over a lot of Europe in the summer months and although we are in a motorhome we tend to keep to a routine as we would have at home. Comfort breaks generally at the usual intervals, AC if it gets really hot but usually if it gets a bit warm we just partially open a window or two. Ours are not toy boys so no problem.

I would just head off and go with your senses, most of all enjoy

 

We had a seat-belt for our bulldog. Basically a harness with a short section of strap which clipped onto one of the back seat seat belt receptacles.

 

Second on the seat belt harness, or maybe a combo of the harness and a doggo ' bucket ' thing that goes across the back seats? For mine I find taking them for a run before a long journey pretty good, then they're asleep for a good portion.

I typically find that dogs may be excited at the start of a journey, but once you get going on the highway, they just go to sleep. Mine aren't interested in toys when in the car, and they don't even really appreciate frequent breaks. Just have a nice comfortable place for your dog to sleep, and some water when you take breaks, and I bet everything will go smoothly. As long as your dog is with you, he will be happy.

 

As the lucky Father of 13 dogs, vacation time requires (wife requires) we take at 4 or so. We drive Phoenix to Sonoma County CA. After the initial excitement for 15 minutes it turns into a sleep fest. One dog will be a piece of cake. We will assume your doggo has had a car ride before. If not the pup will need one. A couple of our wonder dogs have taken themselves out of the vacation drawing since they get anxious and whine too much. All vacation dogs get their nest and harness and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. AC, dogs don't notice. Our horde goes in and out of the house with the 110 degrees temperature outside all day no problemo.

We put Luna’s bed in the boot of the car so she feels at home (all be it surrounded by bags). A walk before the journey and she settles very well. Was good as gold on a 3 hour road trip at the weekend

Old Bill or just Billy in his birthday hat. Last couple months we have been hand feeding Billy. He will go to the bowl and nibble on some dry food at times. He is getting his sandwich a couple times a day. Hand feed him his sandwich because he forgets when it is in his bowl. When the sandwich was in his bowl he would eat a bite and wander off. Wander back and remember and have another bite. Since he is segregated from the rest of the pack this would be tedious waiting for the poor old dog to remember. Morning he gets peanut butter sandwich, afternoon he gets the roast beef or turkey sandwich. 23 and still going.

In case of an accident, this helps protect the dog, but also you as they become flying projectiles inside the car...

 

What a difference a few weeks make. The first picture was taken just after we brought him home; two months down the line and I'd say he's finding his feet in the world just fine.

 

We have driven 12 hours a day many times with our dog. Our dogs have always been crate trained. It is great to be able to crate them if need be. Battery powered fans are helpful if it gets warm. But of course you need to be super careful leaving a dog in the car. As long as it is not to hot windows down, parked in the shade, and with water is OK. Stop regularly for walks and water breaks. We usually bring a big water jug and a bowl. Also be careful with the seat belt harness. We had a dog try to free herself by chewing through the seatbelt. That was an expensive lesson learned.

 

Getting a good photo of a watch can be challenging, a wiggly black puppy is even harder, both at the same time is an impossibility.

 

Time to meet the family. I have posted a couple of posts lately with a couple of members of our pet family so I thought it was about time to introduce them all even though you have met a couple before.

This is Ziggy and Tommy. A couple of Norwegian Forest cats who are brothers, purchased in Saudi Arabia and both now live in Vietnam. Ziggy is my boy who got the name Ziggy because he was born around the time Bowie died and Tommy is my wifes and Tommy because that is what she called him.



And Tommy in his morning spot, our bedroom ensuite basin.

Mango is a Macaw who is a big baby and just a little noisey sometimes



Peck (Gregory Peck) is a Parrotlet and not afraid of anything..

And two more (Budgies) which were given to us because they knew we had birds. I got rid of the tiny cage they were in and had one made to give them lots of room

 

Trouble makers. I recently had a Boston pass and the looks on these two remind me of her. Always up to something.

Thanks for that! Love the birds. We had a Goffins cockatoo for a number of years, and she was a real gem. She would sit on my chest and cuddle with me all evening, and would fly back to her cage to do her business, then fly back to me. When it came time to trim her nails, she would hold up her foot like she was a princess getting the finest treatment.

Sadly she had lead poisoning from a dish that came on a new cage (earthenware made in Mexico), and we had to give her daily injections of a chelating drug to help flush her system. It worked and she lived, but the trust between us and her was gone, and she changed dramatically after that. In the end we had to give her back to the breeder because she was injuring herself, so we were pretty torn up about that. Big mistake doing the injections ourselves...

But she was a great companion for many years. They are special creatures no doubt.

 

The wee pup is doing well. The old lady has seen it all before.
