I think he brought it to the point! But everyone has his own view to the things.

This is pretty terrible. Not only is it uneccesarrily mean spirited (?), but very douchey too. I wouldn't spread this...

Guys, what's wrong with you? It's a satirical and funny input to a recent event and not the end of the world. Where's your humour?

It's a personal attack, isn't it? Also a fat joke? I enjoy people ruffling feathers a little bit but I'm not going to support this kind of joke

Can you tell me a joke which isn't a personal attack to anybody? C'mon, calm down.

No not gonna calm down on this one. Knock the watch and the whole Hodinkee limited edition process all you want. Don't post a picture of a guy's face with an "all you can eat" wings comment because you don't like the watch. How is this appropriate or relevant? 100% if anything on this forum gets edited then this post should

I don't care if it's Hodinkee related, that's mean spirited and you know it.

I'm all for pretty-much-anything-goes humour, but making fun of someone's appearance - particularly someone who's been known to visit these forums from time to time - is crossing a line and, quite frankly, grade school humour. I think the participants on this forum are capable of better.

Just to make this clear: it was me posting this picture here on OF, not someone else.

I get your point and this is a convincing argument. It's up to the mods to decide whether they want to delete the picture. I'm fine either way.

There was a joke to be made with a comparison between Cernan and Clymer that easily could have personally attacked Clymer's "high priest of horology" reputation, the lack of personal accomplishment vs Cernan, or Hodinkee's overall "know it all" attitude, but simply having the punchline of the joke/attack be Clymer's appearance was low-hanging fruit that has no relevancy towards one's opinion on the Ressence limited edition.

Case in point - what if someone substituted Robert-Jan Broer for Clymer, and the Speedy Tuesday for the Ressence, and had simply made fun of his appearance to prove the lack of personal accomplishment between Cernan and Broer; would you not find that offensive?

Difficult to answer. In general I think people staying in public need to have a higher level of tolerance to bear criticism and joking about them personally. It's just because they make their living out of their public appearance. But there are of course limits.

As far as I know Robert-Jan I'm quite sure he wouldn't feel too offended with your example. But this is just my estimation.

Honestly, a "fat joke" was the furthest thing from my mind, and I think you may be projecting something into this that isn't there.
I don't think Ben Clymer is fat... above target BMI maybe, but not obese..

"all you can eat wings" is as pedestrian, common, regular-guy thing as I could imagine, as we all have done it.

The point was to illustrate how desperate the industry is getting, and that at some point, someone will have to step back and say... We are celebrating a Blog!?!

Where is the passion, history, romanticism in that? it is a house of cards.

I see this as a terrible sign for the industry -- potential short term gain, but long term definitive sign of the beginning of a great crisis. Is your passion for a watch blog going to be as reverant as the moon landing? space exploration? your grandfather's watch? Everest conquest? Deepsea exploration? - actual accomplishments?

For me, Hodinkee is the equivalent of "TV-Guide" (and 10 years of collecting and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, I had never even gone to the website until the whole Vacheron debaucle) ...And I understand that you'll never read an article in TV-guide that tells you about the benefits of fresh air... which is fine. But who the hell gets excited about TV guide?!?

Car and Driver Magazine will never write an article about the virtues of bicycling or walking to work.... which is fine.... but what car company would offer a "car and Driver limited edition" with "Car and Driver logo" on the hood?

I apologize to anyone who is offended , but realistically.... what is being celebrated by these limited editions?

A Blog?!?

Clymer is brilliant, and the fact that he could turn this hobby into a big moneymaker is admirable, unlike the rest of us suckers typing online on a watch forum for free... but I think we're about to witness the Icarus paradox...

Again, it was not meant to be a fat-joke, it was meant to be a 'regular guy' joke... contrasting an actual accomplishment to a blog..

But then again, if you have to explain a joke...

Not every watch has to celebrate some great achievement of mankind. The Speedy Tuesday, which I love, celebrates 5 whole years of a blog column and hashtag. These watches, to me, aren't about celebrating a watch blog. These watches are about aesthetics. I am happy that major watch brands are willing to work with hardcore watch fanboys to produce low-run watches with pleasing aesthetics.

The complete phrase is : "if you have to explain a joke... It probably wasn't funny"...

But maybe in this case, maybe it is the audience's fault...::facepalm1::

I was going to let your first explanation slide, but now you've decided to deflect the blame back to those who found your "joke" offensive.

I call BS. Come on man,you chose that unflattering image of Ben with clear intent. Sorry, but the "I was just trying to think of an activity the average guy does" doesn't fly.

Why am I right? Up until your explanation post, not a single commenter on the thread argued about the intent of the image as a fat joke. The argument was around it's tastefulness. It is 100% clear what you were implying.

Trying to back out of it the way you are now and then taking a dig at everyone's supposed over-sensitivities as being to blame is not a good look. Own up to your mistake (or inherent bias) and move on.

This is exactly the way I took it - when I saw people taking it as a fat/appearance joke it was a WTF moment.

So rest assured that not everyone missed the point...
