This is exactly the way I took it - when I saw people taking it as a fat/appearance joke it was a WTF moment.

So rest assured that not everyone missed the point...
+1 on that!

Why am I right? Up until your explanation post, not a single commenter on the thread argued about the intent of the image as a fat joke. The argument was around it's tastefulness. It is 100% clear what you were implying.

You mean apart from this?

It's a personal attack, isn't it? Also a fat joke? I enjoy people ruffling feathers a little bit but I'm not going to support this kind of joke

Now please, @R3D9 own up to your own mistake. And do get off that high horse, you look like a right idiot.

I'm confused and not certain if my meaning came across. My argument was that everyone in the thread to that point felt the joke was intended to be a jab at Ben's physical appearance.

I'm definitely willing to acknowledge there were other dimensions to the joke besides an insinuation that Ben is overweight.

Am I understanding what you're trying to say here? Not trying to be snarky with you, I'm honestly not 100% sure I'm clear what you're implying from your comment.

As an aside, do you really need to refer to me as an idiot. Again, what is with the grade school tactics some people on this forum are using when having a debate?

I really don't want to get in an open-air argument with any of the members of this forum. My original intention in jumping in to the discussion was to stand up for what I saw as an impolite personal attack on a fellow forum member.

I acknowledge that everything is open to interpretation and humour is always subjective. There's no way for me to know what was in @Superdoc 's mind when he created the post and it's probably unfair of me to speculate.

Final thoughts are that perception is reality and Ben is a human and I think a lot of reasonable people can at least see some possibility that he would have taken the joke as a personal jab.

I respect everyone's opinion here and I'll sign-off on the topic. If anyone wants to continue the dialog via PM, I'm happy to do so.

1. It wasn't @Superdoc who created the post, it was me.
2. I'm quite sure Ben has enough self-mockery to deal with this.
3. Can we stop this debate now? A lot of opinions exchanged already. Will not become better...

Is this discussion of a personal attack all about the astronaut/hipster comparison picture, or am I missing something? Because if that picture is the source of all this controversy I really don't get it. I see no personal attack or fat joke. That picture to me represents two kinds of people and the watch style they like. The professional astronaut/hero/intrepid explorer gets the Speedmaster. The self-absorbed hipster computer geek gets the (IMHO) hideous Hodikee. Both are special additions, but the two people in the picture have radically different ideas about what is "special." It's a slam on the Hodikee and nothing else, at least as far as I see.

Again, it was not meant to be a fat-joke, it was meant to be a 'regular guy' joke... contrasting an actual accomplishment to a blog..
FWIW i didnt even think "fat joke" until somebody else mentioned it amd even after that.... i just thiught it was meant to be what it is.... could have said " sat in his lazy boy with a laptop and a beer" but then it would seem he was calling him lazy.

Point is. Maybe one can skip the personal.... but this is a personal issued watch so it kinda relates.

Anyway, like the guy, hate the watch, and if you ask me @Superdoc IS FAT AND OVER BLOWN AND IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE HE HAS MAN BOOBS. But i dont want to get personal about it either.

I myself could stand to lose a few more pounds, yet "fat joke" never entered my mind. Maybe I'm just an oddball - I don't get offended easily.

The complete phrase is : "if you have to explain a joke... It probably wasn't funny"...

But maybe in this case, maybe it is the audience's fault...::facepalm1::
Bro, come on now. I can definitely detect an effort at humor in what you posted to IG. This is going to be alright. 😀

I'm happy to hear the intent of this wasn't as mean as it first appeared to me, but I still think it's very easy to take it as such. I'm still super confused by all the negativity evoked by these Hodinkee watches. Let's have more love, less hate

That's a very grey watch that looks a tenth of the price. Not even that cool

For what it's worth, I too was astonished to hear this being interpreted as a fat joke. Hadn't even crossed my mind someone might find him fat or pudgy (and I'm a picky parisian female).

I didn't take it as fat joke. Little ribbing going on, but sheesh let's not overblow it.

I took it as a comment about try-hard attempt at making some epic piece.

Don't want to disappoint those that thought it might be a fat joke...

BTW I just thought the IG thing was a bit of a "Dig at the 'Dink", by someone who is very passionate about his Omega relationship😉😜😁

Why? If I hate it i hate it. Its not like im going to hurt its feelings. Im just as vocal when i love something.... like @Superdoc 's boobs
