For those of you reading about the screw Leica, there is Kodak's Leica Killer, the Retina! The IIIC (large C) and IIIS plus the Schneider-Kreuznach lenses...

Not to get into a Leica vs Retina argument, both good systems.

Tom
I have a couple Retina’s- great folding pocket camera with a razor sharp lens- carried them on vacations for years. The Zeiss Super Ikonta B’s are my fav for folding pocket camera in medium format- the bigger alternative to the Retina.

Although these old camera are off topic slightly, they are fun to play with. I need to note for anyone reading who is tempted to pick up an old Leica, Kodak Retina or Zeiss Ikonta- like old watches these are 50-70 year old mechanical devises that will require proper service. Yes it may “work” at the garage sale and make a clicking sound, but the speeds of the shutter are mechanically regulated and the slower speeds freeze up first. There are a handful of people left in the world who can rebuild leaf shutters like in the Retina or Zeiss (they are like a clockworks) and the cloth used in the shutter curtains of older Leica’s is very specific. So make sure you find a competent camera repair tech who knows vintage cameras and has access to parts which are all NLA.

The joke about photographers and Leica’s has always been that a fine art photographer is usually the second owner...the dentist/surgeon/ lawyers are usually the first.

So well said!!
I fully agree

Anyone else catch these “My Leica” segments? And anyone else wondering what salaries are like over there??? Just casually tossing around $30K in Leica equipment like it ain’t no thang...
At Hodinkee, as a youngster you'll get the title of Senior writer ... 👎

That leica is best rangefinder 35mm film camera ever made , there is no question. but in the digital world today, probably is not the best anymore. we can buy any Sony Alpha or a Fuji and mount any vintage leitz lenses using adapters, and we get the same results like using an M9or M10 with top of the leica current aspherical lenses

with all due respect that would be the Zeiss ZI. Far superior to any M model and taking M lenses.
😀😎

That was probably one of the most trite videos on photography I have ever seen- friggin hipsters. And shooting the Philip Johnson house with a Leica- heresy!

And I think the dislikes speak to the fact that Hondinkee jumped the shark on this one- they are no longer just trying to sell product or even lifestyle, they are trying to sell philosophy and creativity...stay in your lane.

Yes, it came up with POMPOUS and this,
ben-clymer-landscape-2015.jpg

A quote from an interview in 2017.
How is today’s luxury-watch buyer different from his predecessor?

"The ultimate luxury for collectors and buyers isn’t about a trip to Switzerland. People who read Hodinkee know what they want already. They don’t want to be talked down to, or be forced to have champagne and caviar. They just want the product."

I think what Dinky is doing here is trying to steer their marketing rather than just selling product. It’s akin to what Rolex has been doing but by much different tactics- Dinky’s approach is ham-fisted and has clearly ended up alienating their base.
