Well, again...it's a much smaller premium relative to the normal M10.

https://leicacamerausa.com/m10-p-black-chrome.html (body is $7,995)
https://leicacamerausa.com/35mm-f1-4-asph-summilux-silver-e46-m.html (silver lens is $6,095)

So if you buy the same kit retail, you pay $14,090. The Hodinkee premium is ~$900.

Regardless, for me, $14,090 is way more than I'm ever going to spend on any camera, no matter how good it looks or how good the photos are.

I use a now close to 10 year old Nikon D90...140,000 shutter count and still takes great photos for my job.

I totally agree with anyone taking this position, but if people want to get upset about a "$15K Hodinkee camera collaboration," they should be equally upset about Leica as a brand (not saying you were "upset," just speaking generally), which would be akin to being upset about Rolex or Omega as brands. That's all I was pointing out. 👍

If you want to argue in favour of or defend these collaborations, that's your choice. Not everyone is going to agree. Personally I couldn't care less what they do or don't do, as I'm most certainly not their customer type...

For me it's the marketing and it's effects that interest me as I stated previously. It's the same sort of FOMO and greed that Rolex is using right now that seems to feed the popularity of these items IMO, rather than the product itself.

Leica is weird thing. From a pure performance perspective there are a million camera that can do better what a Leica do but.......they don't feel the same way.

Leica is really all about the experience taking the photograph and that feeling that their photographs give (as a friend of mine said presenting the new SL2 ) and when i work with my Nikon i don't have the same feeling that the Leica gave to me when i had the luck to have one loaned to me.

Agreed, the LE are for rich people that take crappy photographs but i won't esitate a second to buy and M10 or an M240 with a Noctilux if had the budget because of that feeling that it gives you.....but as watches, not everyone like that particular watch or understand why.

For some time I used an early 1950s Leica IIIf for casual use (with a separate Weston exposure meter of course). Lovely to handle but if I needed to take "proper" photos the Olympus OM4 was the tool of choice. In the paddock of a historic car race meeting toting an old Leica got lots of approving nods 😎

That "feel" thing -- SnapOn tools have it too. I suspect an LSD coating.....

The question is, why, and for whom.

There is a long history of people that set trends, and others that follow them. Look at fashion magazines or shows, and the buzz and sales that creates for the deep-pocketed who believe they are hip when they bought it first. So, while there is typically a disdain for any Hodinkee-tweaked item (particularly here), there are people out there who want to be told what is cool and fashionable, without putting a lot of effort into figuring out what that is. So, they find their guru and follow along.

And this explains, despite our mostly collective puzzlement, how these things sell, and why they continue to persist with the same business model for a variety of items. Did they do a fountain pen yet, or Hodinkee-inspired cuff links?

Sometimes i really can't get all that disdain that i see here for everything Hodinkee do. Oh well....

For me, my disdain comes from the blatant snobbery that Hodinkee and Ben Clymer in particular exhibit.

I still own 6 film Leica’s and have made money with all of them (use to carry a pair of M6’s for candid wedding work- a black one for B&W film and silver for color). At work we have an M10 (traded an M9 for it which wa as huge step up), an M-Monochrome CCD and M-Monochome CMOs (they have distinctly different “looks” to the images, the CCd is far more film-like but has a very low native ISO at 160). We also have a full complement of Leica and Zeiss glass for them all.
The Leica M series is a wonderful line of cameras- all of their sub-lines are glorified point & shoots but have good glass. Leica has a long history of making limited edition cameras with a premium price tag- the pairing with dinky is nothing new. I believe Hondinkee is broadening their lines to be more like Huckberry which is a well curated lifestyle merchant....it’s a neat concept for people who enjoy luxury goods but lack time, patience to research or the imagination to create an “upscale” lifestyle befitting their income. Personal shoppers have been around for ages- the lifestyle website is just an extension of that.
Leica’s are a niche tool, and like any tool are appropriate for specific work- reportage and environmental portraiture with natural light are the true places where they shine.
I am an architectural photographer primarily, so I rarely find any use for the Leica’s, I use either a Linhof system or Nikon D- system with a full compliment of PC (perspective correction) lenses. Portraiture is with Hasselbald and Profoto lighting- even for outdoor environmental work.

The joke about photographers and Leica’s has always been that a fine art photographer is usually the second owner...the dentist/surgeon/ lawyers are usually the first.
They make a wonderful product, and like Rolex are a luxury brand...the hype and inflation of the market sadly keeps it out of the hands of many artists who can’t afford them....until they trickle down-steam.

The comparison is Rolex misses the mark a little because this is an electronic consumer product that will depreciate and eventually become obsolete.

That being said, it is similar to Rolex and other lux goods because it is quality at a very high price. No one would argue that Porsche, Rolex, etc are not quality and the high price and exclusivity are part of the allure.

Hodinkee is clearly trying to cash in on this lifestyle game and are just becoming a luxury retailer. That’s too bad.

Full disclaimer: I am in no way connected to Hodinkee, so please, no accusations of shilling. But here is one limited edition I hear they are working on that I will certainly avail myself of :

i have been collecting leica since college. unfortunately they still haven't figured out a way to restore their formal glory. All these limited edition digital cameras with outrageous price certainly is not helping them.
Most of my friends use their leica lenses on their sonys. I still have a old M8 that I have had for many years

Simple answer: no thank you Hodinkee and leica
