allegedly did to the Nina...

For the record I think they where complicit in market manipulation on that one.

look they are enthusiasts that where also great business men that slogged and grinded. They literally sat in department stores with a pop up just a few short years ago trying to build the brand. They deserve the success and if they fail they deserve it too.

What bugs me is people bashing the brand because it’s not for them anymore... that seems a bit entitled to me. I am not saying that your doing this @abrod520 bur others are.

What they are doing is obviously working... just this travel alarm clock seems to far to the bulk of vocal readers.

It may sound like entitlement, but if you think about it, it was us who made them so popular, and put them in this position. Us readers, us buyers of those watches at the pop-ups, us who gladly bought from their first strap lines since we wanted to support them.

Hell, I personally chatted with Ben Clymer at two of those popups in New York. Back then he was personable enough and glad to discuss watches, at least for a little bit while there weren't too many other customers at the table. Fast forward to now, when I stopped into the Omega popup in Soho this past winter, and couldn't get even the slightest interest out of the people working there in an actual conversation about watches (two of their more well-known staffers, BTW.)

You know how sometimes you walk into a watch boutique and end up killing 3 hours talking watches without any actual care if you bought anything or not? That's what Hodinkee used to be.

You know how you walk into a Tourneau and nobody even looks at you, doesn't want to bother with you unless you're buying something and then rushes you out of the shop once you do? That's what Hodinkee is now.

greatest of all time leather? 😀

You're on to something here, had they wrapped this abomination with Muhammad Ali's actual skin it *might* almost justify the asking price.

Oh come on, we spent on way dumber things than this. Or ANYTHING from HERMES, REALLY.

$6k for a clock isn’t terrifying stupid. It’s borderline, yes. But not terrifyingly so. It’s not like we have President Kanye West.

plus there are much more than 96 bankers in a NY city block, alone. So, this clock thing wasn’t made for us Pepsi-can collectors anyways. (No offense my Pepsi cans collecting colleagues; But, fυck the Root-beer bottle collectors, they are assholes)

Also, the Fed pumped in 12TRILLIONS in the past 6 months. If you aren’t selling a $6000 piece of shit. You SHOULD!!!

While I agree that in principle anything from Hermes is in the ludicrously stupid price range, the market at least has shown that if you purchase wisely with them, value is retained, and sometimes the ROI is incredible. This does not in my mind justify $12K handbags. If the Donkee Clock was released in conjunction with Hermes I would have not at all been surprised by a $6K price. But then the leather work would have been absolutely top notch too, and none of the off-center screws or fraying, etc.

Valid point, would have been much nicer to see a co-branded dial too, with the Hodinkee bit almost illegibly small, or "In collaboration with Hodinkee" on the reverse side. I had an Hermes watch carrier years back and I was surprised how much effort went into perfecting that thing, every tiny detail was perfect.

Friend has just bought a Hermes Apple Watch. It made him happy, and it is nice, although I wouldn't have one, because some nice straps are not sufficient for the premium for me.

I do like Hermes ties, though, and either get them in a sale or in duty free. They last very well, and are understated. A case of getting what you pay for there. Which doesn't seem to be the case with Hodclock.

Well just look at that thing compared to the Donkey Sauce one. For far less money you can have the iconic and lovely JLC font greeting you each morning, rather than something that sounds like an insult you'd hear come out of a Jawa's mouth.

Side note, thinking about the celebrity thread from the other day - while the dude is definitely ripe for roasting given his, um, "larger than life" persona, as a person I've heard absolutely nothing but the best of him. The guy is evidently super nice and goes out of his way to help out.

A chef friend of my was part of a fund-raising show with him a few years back. The report he gave me was pretty opposite of what you have heard. But that was a snapshot in time, and may not have been typical (or he has improved a lot over the years, especially as his kids have been growing up).
