You are a brave man to take "the roll of the eyes " in public !
Hodinkee stayed with full retail price thinking it was an A or Luxuray brand name when the market dipped with discounts everywere. They will lose money on pre-owned but still have margin on the new watches so maybe they can survive on it.

There is an office furniture store in a strip mall nearby that has been CLOSING-EVERYTHING MUST GO- LAST CHANCE- for the last 25 years.
There was a carpet store what advertised on the radio like that. Always going out of business. That is if they did not sell carpets they would go out of business. Sometimes they would move from one side of the street to the other. Where ever the rent was cheaper.

I was just going to mention this, every carpet store I've ever seen is perpetually 'Going Out of Business', then they move, or just stay where they are and repeat the process.

Perhaps Dinky has found the path to long term success!

Worked out great before.

“creating the world's most detailed, engaging, and entertaining watch content”

Hodinkee just don’t get it - this content is already being created here on this forum 😀

I went to the craft store to purchace some stitching needles for making watch straps yesterday. The small beading needles that break easy. And are also good for working on hairsprings. Possibly even used for escape wheel pivots. (If I could figure how to temper them.)

The fimo and sculpty clay was on clearance close out 97cents. Big red last chance tags all over it.

I grabbed package of flesh colored package what is used in doll repair.

Got to the checkout and was charged list price. I complained. That if felt like bait and switch. At that point the cashier gave in and gave it to me for the discounted price.

Harder to do that online.

Of course the store is in chapter 11 or so orr pre chapter 11. So you can not blame the retailer. Customers are tough. And advertising on TV and the net says you desrve the finer things in life to feel good. So therefore you are entitled by god to take them for what ever you can get them for. Everyone deserves a trophy for participating right?

I bought an extra bag of candy.

The extra bag of candy is a nice humanistic response

As more of a buyer than a seller it’s clear that Crown and Caliber’s prices are significantly higher than you’d pay on the second hand market. For sure you get the reliability of an actual store that won’t rip you off but that premium comes at 35% more. They can keep lowering their prices by $75 at a time but they won’t move any more inventory than they normally would. Their business model of buy low sell high was sound at first except they bought too much and nobody wants to buy high.

And it’s hard to “buy low” when you have been hyping up the market for years. As someone who was a consummate bargain hunter (or dumpster diver as one of our mods calls us)- whenever Dinky or Fratello would publish an article on one of my beloved bargain collectibles, my first thought was “well, there goes that one”.

Wow, crazy! Had not seen it. Must go more often to my local Goodwill.

I pop into my Goodwill every so often because of that story.

Becouse of that Goodwill now does not sell watches direct. Online only at shopgoodwill.

I still think that the dealer what would show up at the NAWCC marts (pre internet) got them from goodwill or one of the other charity shops. So I suspect for the most part they have someone who vets such things.

On the other hand the LeCoultre is going to look a lot like LeGrand which was the Monkey Wards house brand name. So one would really need to know what they were looking at.

You would have to be very brave/foolish to buy the dregs of the Crown and Caliber inventory when they're not taking returns.

Well they have a "flash sale" going on now and I picked up several of the timex Waterbury editions for gifts...palatable at $69 not so much at $279 (which is what I think the msrp originally was a few yrs ago)...
Subdued Hodinkee branding, maybe kinda some Explorer-ish vibes, no date window, nice leather strap. 40mm is a bit big but manageable.

Wait until they arrive at your door step before counting this as a successful purchase. You may get an email in a few days stating that they no longer have the items that they “sold” to you available. It’s a hot mess over there and only getting worse

It will all end up on eBay sooner or later ...

I blew my budget on rusty omega 56x parts. Now if they had some empty aftermarket SM300 or NOS cases really cheap ...
