Hodinkee “sale” mistake

So I get an email from Hodinkee advertising their last chance sale. I was pleasantly surprised to see prices were half off on many watches. I even added one Zodiac to my cart while I looked around. Apparently that was a mistake and within minutes the 50% off went back to 10% off. When I tried to purchase the watch in my cart for $848 it reverted back to $1616. Good ‘ole Hodinkee…almost got me 😀

So I assume they had a goatskin travel clock for free with any purchase?

That would have been a nice catch for $848.

“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” … smart play would have been to sell you the watch at the posted number. Now more bad publicity on an international forum.

Early bird gets the worm...

So usualy sellers with discount adverts just have one or two for the discount price, think Kickstarter or Black Friday, and someone else clocked out just before you. Or it`s a fraud.....😬

They are closing down their sales. There will be bargains, especially as they get rid of the last items.

For example, I just bought this Flightmaster Only book for $95 (about $100 off). Today it is $72 plus shipping.

I went to the craft store to purchace some stitching needles for making watch straps yesterday. The small beading needles that break easy. And are also good for working on hairsprings. Possibly even used for escape wheel pivots. (If I could figure how to temper them.)

The fimo and sculpty clay was on clearance close out 97cents. Big red last chance tags all over it.

I grabbed package of flesh colored package what is used in doll repair.

Got to the checkout and was charged list price. I complained. That if felt like bait and switch. At that point the cashier gave in and gave it to me for the discounted price.

Harder to do that online.

Of course the store is in chapter 11 or so orr pre chapter 11. So you can not blame the retailer. Customers are tough. And advertising on TV and the net says you desrve the finer things in life to feel good. So therefore you are entitled by god to take them for what ever you can get them for. Everyone deserves a trophy for participating right?

I bought an extra bag of candy.

I have always disliked everything about Hodinkee: their over-hyped approach, the constant blatant errors in their content, the questionable mixing of "journalism" and sponsorship, the childish focus on influencers, the lack of serious experts ... you name it. I never understood why supposedly smart people would invest tens of millions into this company of smoke and mirrors, and the acquisition of C&C just cheapened the brand even further, since everyone knows it's a place you go to find secondhand watches that the owners can't unload anywhere else. I'm sure they'd like to think that they were taken down by an unforeseeable price bubble in the watch market, but I'd say it was inevitable ... or at least bad karma.

So am I feeling some schadenfreude about their failure ... yes I am. The only thing I don't understand is why they just don't go away entirely, enough is enough.

So they announce they will stop selling, by sending out a sales pitch telling us they 🤨 are now selling at a discount ? Sounds very "selling" to me. And we have to like it because Benny C. himself is back at the Ho ?

This one will enter the book "How Not To" next to New Cola.

Everyone loves a deal. I was always a sucker for a BOGO (but one get one- half price, free etc). Once the smartphone allowed me to price check in real time I realized most of the time the averaged price was no better or even still higher than competitor pricing. My wife hates when I do this in stores. She’ll be throwing two in the cart and I’ll be checking my phone while she rolls her eyes at me.
