Help with inherited watch, advice appreciated.

Kia ora from New Zealand.

My father inherited his fathers watch who lived in Scotland his whole life.

I'd love to have it restored in secret but feel it may be too expensive or not possible.

I grabbed a few photos quickly when I visited last so not the best quality.

Can anyone tell me anything about this watch, it's model etc and the pitfalls of restoration? The crown is missing and the cover seems to be plastic... Replaced in the past I assume?

It looks to have been gold plated but mostly gone and the back seems well worn.

Help and advice would be fantastic.

Kind regards

Philip Muir

Hi Phil,

For any of us to give you good advice, we would need to see the insides, specifically a shot of the movement and a shot of the inside caseback. The caseback can be carefully removed with a knife blade.

At first glance it would appear to be a redial or a watch of "unknown origin", however, only the insides will tell us the story.

Cheers
Jim

Philip, without opening the back, nobody can tell you anything. First bad news : the dials repainted. And a very bad job. If you are in Auckland, there are good watchmakers. As a family heirloom, restore. As for commercial value: next to nil. Kind regards from Australia. Achim

That caseback--wow. I'd love to hear the story behind how it got like that.

Use, lots of use. Sweat can be very corrosive especially over a long period of time.

Not what’s being asked, but given the condition of this watch, the only redeeming qualities are the memories (ie, it’s not a wearable piece without significant investment of funds). I would consider making a nice shadow box or display case for it, and invest the restoration funds into a new/vintage Omega family heirloom.

Thank you, everyone, I had the feeling this was not going to be worth the investment. My dad has done so much for me over the years, I thought it might be nice. I can only imagine he wore it after it stopped working?

Thanks again!

If I can get a photo one day of the internals, I will post them here.
