I was tasked with finding a watch for my sisters 40th. I showed her a bucket load of watches and eventually found her one she liked after picking out loads I thought she would like. It's a nightmare. Back to your challenge. How about a Unimatic. The U2 range is quite nice. Now they sell out quickly but I also know they get quite a few returns so it is worth looking at the website.

Wow, so many suggestions. Thank you OF. This is making life much easier.

In answer to a couple of questions;

- He's quite a small chap. Nothing bigger than 40mm I think.
- I really feel it has to be an automatic. He's not going get on with daily winding and quartz just won't feel quite right.
- Probably not a diver, I think time only or time/date perhaps. Super classic.
- Should've said, Roman numerals are a no.
- He's a smart casual guy. The watch will be worn all day, every day. From working at his drawing board throwing his grandchildren around. Nothing too formal. Something that can take a few knocks and still look great.

I'll make a shortlist from the suggestions so far. Will update once the decision has been made!

How about a Seiko Alpinist, or the current Prospex look-alike?

In addition to the green dial, they are available in blue and linen-white.

If I could only wear one watch, I might choose one of these.

I'd thought the same, however nothing seems quite 'clean' enough. Wrong kind of design language I think. The problem with looking for someone else is you get painfully close to buying another watch for yourself... I ordered a new Hamilton Khaki 🤦
The struggle is real, my friend

(Apologies for the thread drift!)
Had never seen an Stowa in person until I met a father/son duo that came to a convention at which I volunteered. I picked them up at the airport. Pops was wearing a (very. VERY) nice 1675. I complimented him on it and they both looked at me like "why do you even know what that is?"

I flashed my Speedy and just assured them I was "watch people."

The son eagerly rummaged around his backpack and pulled out his Stowa.

Long story short, it was an incredible watch and I instantly added one to my spreadsheet of must-haves...

Yeah, I make spreadsheets for fun. Go ahead, get your digs in

Wait, do some watch nerds NOT have spreadsheets to plan out their purchases?

If so, we should stage an intervention

I can't believe it was page 3 before someone recommended a longines. There are a couple of amazing watches around £800 from them. If they aren't a watch person would they appreciate a brand they are familiar with more than one of the smaller (but just as cool) brands?

Those are clean designs but for those interested in history- those designs pay homage to and are characteristic of the military pilot watches known as B-Uhr- which the German Luftwaffe used during WWII to guide its bomber planes.... ie to destroy and conquer Europe under the nazi regime.

Nice design, if you don’t mind the memorial vibes— which some watch manufacturers are quick to sweep under the rug or otherwise obfuscate in their marketing efforts.
I seem to recall being shocked by an IWC ad, they were one of the four original manufacturers of this design, along with Stowa, Laco, and Lange & Sohne.

Thanks Syrte ... I was aware 😀 And yes.. .the 'neutral Swiss' were supplying things to all sides of the fence...

At this stage of history, holding a grudge with watch manufacturers is akin to holding a grudge to todays German citizens because of what their grandfathers/great-grandfathers generation did...and let us not forget that literally since then, until now, there are 'wars' being waged all over the world (will not name any names, don't want to get banned or drift this thread) by certain countries ... and the watches their military were issued are not frowned upon ...

Regardless, I love that bronze stowa 😀

Junghans <3

How about Christopher Ward? On little BF discount now (but keep in mind they do tend to sell with up to 50% discount occasionally).
Not as common as Tissot, Certina or even Hamilton, not a small micro brand assembling pieces in garage anymore. Lots of interesting design variations IMO - check C65 family.

If brand new then a Seiko 5 is undeniable bang for buck.

If vintage the Zenith AutoSport Luxe. Should be able to get a nice example using up your whole budget.
