Help on my first Pie-Pan hunt - real?

Hi! I am on the hunt for my first Omega Constellation Pie Pan and saw the below advert. This would be my first vintage watch. The owner stated that the watch is all original, except for the glass (replaced) and the buckle. At first the advert referenced a 561 caliber, but after I pointed out that the photo’s showed a 564, he changed it. Do you have any advice on how I could establish whether this watch is genuine?

Welcome to OF. Links aren’t great, they won’t work later on. Please post the pics. You will get a more engaged reply from the community and it will remain useful for others in the future.

The first thing that jumps out is the polishing. This example is way too polished. The dog leg lugs need to retain sharper edges, otherwise you lose the attractiveness of the model straight away. So just that means a pass.

I would have a look at Desmond’s blog and related threads on the forum to get a better sense of what to look for to assess the watch.

The pinned thread “learn how to fish” is also a good starter.

Welcome @sidneypeoples
As @Mark020 and @theluckyluke say, we prefer pics instead of clicking on links.
As you’re new to this parish - and to save time - I’ll post some pics.
The watch is significantly over polished.
€2,970 would be an ambitious price for a good 14k dogleg pie pan - in this case it is probably twice the value.

For reference.

This is what the lugs on a gold dogleg should look like.

Many thanks for the help! This is all very useful, and apologies for the faux-pas, have taken note for the next time.

Would you avoid over polished lugs like this, or just price accordingly?

This would depend on what you are looking for.

Anyone interested in acquiring a good example ( appreciating the original design intentions.) would avoid.

Someone just looking for a vintage watch with a good name and great movement might look at buying this watch - at the right price.

The problem is that sellers price watches like this as though they are good examples.

This is really a matter of individual choice, and there is obviously a price at which someone would buy this watch, given the value of the gold and other parts. But personally, it's not a watch I'd be interested in owning.

If you’re on this forum, likely the answer is no!

From my own experience, I’d say:

1/ polishing is one of the hardest thing to assess at the beginning (especially when there is some but not too excessive - which isn’t the case in the example above obviously).

2/ appreciating unpolished watches takes time to develop.

Which means that: if you’re continuing in the watch hobby, no matter how much you paid for the watch, the excessive polishing will end up bothering you, almost surely. From this perspective, negotiating or not doesn’t matter, if that makes sense. And once you realise you need a better example, you might find it hard to get what you paid for it. There are too many average or below average examples out there. I personally think you’re better off overpaying for a pristine example, rather than negotiating down an average or below average example!
