Looking at the bezel, I was thinking of these:

Yes it was my Father's watch. Unfortunately I'm not really in a position to give my lovely old Speedmaster the care it will need in the future. 321 spares and services aint getting any cheaper.馃檨

I'm sure a lot of members would be interested in it Jonathan, if you were asking a realistic price.

Well I would appreciate it very much if somebody would let me know what that is Dennis.馃槙

Things have changed and Speedmaster prices are lower now. I've asked one or two of our most respected experts and they are not entirely sure of what the right price is.馃榾

Well I'm not sure who those experts are, but I can have a good guess, and to be brutally honest I'm sure they both have a figure in mind that falls far short of your expectations, and are too polite to tell you.

Well help me out mate!... I'm a tough old basstedd, I don't mind a bit of brutal honesty. 馃槻

If we now think that the guide prices (that this community often refer to) are out of line with the reality of the current market, it would good to know how things are right now.馃榾 I nearly sold it for 拢100 before I came here, so need to be polite.馃榿

@nonuffinkbloke : I鈥檝e watched your listing (and your previous posts about the watch鈥檚 history) with interest and sympathy. I鈥檒l take a risk and take a crack at your question.

These are all things you already know. Unless a piece is really nice or really unique, the market has almost come to a stop, it seems.

The famous price chart says

Your latest ask:

And the chart鈥檚 description of its categories:

I think you鈥檝e priced it at Good, when it鈥檚 really in between Fair and Good, given the wear and tear evident on the case, dial and hands.

I have a 105.012-66 HF in similar condition that I want to sell but haven鈥檛 bothered to list yet, given how challenging the market has become for less than excellent pieces. Maybe it鈥檒l get better or maybe it鈥檒l get worse, but I know that unless I鈥檓 prepared to price it substantially under the market, it won鈥檛 move.

I hope you鈥檒l forgive me for the presumption (but you did ask). If I really needed to move that watch quickly, I鈥檇 list it for as close to $9.0k as I felt comfortable. But, I might pull it off the market for a few weeks first.

I hope I haven鈥檛 been too brutal. In your position, I鈥檇 want somebody to tell me too. Like I said, my heart goes out to you. This isn鈥檛 just any other watch, it鈥檚 your Dad鈥檚.

Best of luck with it!

Bob

PS - I won鈥檛 bother to tell you to keep your Dad鈥檚 watch, as many have said that already. There鈥檚 nobody for whom that watch is worth more than you and your family. I鈥檇 kill for a Speedy my dad wore.

Don't think the dial is correct for 1986.
Should have a tall S and r.

So I believe mid 90s to be correct.

Another thing to mention, when selling, it is much better to just price it correctly first, rather than try a high price then reduce and reduce. (I know finding this price is the hard part sometimes)
I鈥檓 not sure why but i think people lose interest the longer the advert runs.
If you are really wanting to sell, i advise pulling the add, wait a few weeks then readvertise on multiple forums at a realistic price.
Good luck, the watch and story are great, just a slow market.

A well thought out explanation but it does ignore that Jonathan's watch has a brown dial. How to quantify that is tricky but it might a factor for some. Also William's table doesn't include bracelet value, not sure if you have factored that in. Whatever, it is clearly overpriced, if it weren't it would have sold. The slowing market isn't helping either.

Caught me out. You鈥檙e correct. But, the lume plots. To me, they negate the brown dial.

Truthfully, I鈥檝e never been a real brown dial fanboy either. NOS is rarely with a brown dial.

Thankyou Bob, and no, you have not been too brutal at all.馃榿
What I'm after is some clarity on the situation, and I thankyou for taking the time and effort to explain your thoughts in such detail.

It's a confusing thing, when your experience is limited to a very specific item. I came on to this forum to learn and be advised. I have been guided by what I've read and what I've been told by those "who know". Things have changed and, in a way, you have confirmed my own thoughts.

I think I have always been of the opinion that my watch was no "safe queen", and sat somewhere below the Speedmaster101 "Good" category. However, I also felt that the combination of Brown dial, single family ownership, correct extract of archive and top quality servicing would go some way to add some value.

I will with give the matter a bit of thought, but I very much appreciate your thoughts on the matter. They make a lot of sense.馃榾

Thankyou @padders. This honest response is very helpful, when you are not entirely sure what is going on. Much appreciate! 馃榾

Again, a helpful honest reply.馃榾 I've been running this stuff around my head, and it's good to know others think the same.

Jonathan:

My pleasure (?) to be of assistance. I鈥檝e read and enjoyed your contributions here on OF and I appreciated the opportunity to be a sounding board for you.

I did worry about offending you and I鈥檓 very relieved I apparently didn鈥檛.

Selling stuff is a pain in the ass.

Best,
Bob
