Hi all, I have a beautiful Omega Speedmaster Pro 3572.50

- I've owned it for about 6 years now, and it's never skipped a beat or given any issues. That being said, I own and wear over 12 watches and during this Covid period don't get a lot of wrist-time for any of them.

- Today, I would it up as usual and headed out for some meetings. After about 3 hours, I realised that the time had not moved since 11.00am and found that strange. I noticed the seconds hand was not moving, and the balance wheel on the open caseback was also not moving.

- I tried winding the watch and although it winds with the sound it normally makes, it was not building up any resistance and seemed to wind indefinitely.
- I proceeded to pull out the crown, and all of a sudden the seconds hand started moving, the balance wheel was also moving as per normal, it was as if pulling out the crown somehow "unstuck" something that was blocking the watch from functioning as per normal.

- I wound the minutes hand forwards and backwards, and noticed that when turning the minutes hand backwards - the seconds hand also moved backwards momentarily.

- Overall, it's a very strange thing that's happening to my Omega and I was wondering if anyone had any insight into this. Ultimately, I think I will need to bring it to a reputable watchmaker to have a look.

- I'm probably not sending it to Omega, to avoid the risk of them changing out my tritium hands/dials or mishandling the watch somehow.

Thanks in advance for the input, and looking forward to hearing any insight!

this is completely normal.

can you wind your watch normally after that?

Do you know when the watch was last serviced?

Thank you for your reply. After pushing the crown back in, everything goes back to the same "stuck" position.
- the seconds hand has stopped again
- the balance wheel won't move again

Not at all, but I figure it could be a long time. 6 years in my hands and I have no idea when it was serviced after 1997.
Servicing aside, I was wondering if anyone could diagnose the issue based on what is happening with the movement just so I know how serious it is.

I'm still not very keen to send it in to Omega (who will likely send it halfway across the world to Switzerland)

Here's a link to the winding issue, I just took this 10 minutes ago and it seems that the watch will not function even with the crown pulled out now 😕

- at 0.32 seconds, the seconds hand moves backwards by about 15 seconds

You're due for a service anyways, so do that and don't worry about the rest of it, just mention it to the watchmaker when you drop it off or mail it off.

As noted on WUS, the mainspring is broken...

Does't work, give ya $20 for it....
Kidding
If you can use a loop, look at [ the back, crown @ right ]
Inspect the brass gear [ driver gear ] and the teeth meshing into the white gear [ coupling gear ]
In the photo they appear to be off almost at different levels.
2 put a mirror on table top & look at the reflection of the back side with a few light bumps to the palm.
See if anything appears on the back glass, dirt, screw, foreign [ workers ] materials, maybe move the hands too as before.
Possible mainspring snapped. Sold a co-worker a watch, dang ten minutes later he is back.
Watch stopped, the unbreakable [New mainsring ] broke.
It was strange, they toss a spot of mercury in the mfg process.
There was this break very wierd crystaline like blob break.
So, it could be that also or the spot weld broke on the end of the mainspring.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

It's much appreciated, and I think the only route for me would be to go to a good independent watchmaker.

Just a quick question, of something I'm wondering:

- Would the mainspring be able to be broken as a "wear and tear" part? Or could it possibly snap if used over many many years.

- I don't baby this watch and wear it as and when, on holidays, when working, out hiking etc.
- It was my understanding that it can only be broken if I wound the watch beyond it's resistance, despite being fully wound up.

Thank you!

it is wear and tear part. watchmakers will correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding is that mainsprings break mainly because of metal fatigue over the years. mainsprings are normally replaced each time you service watch.

No. Just wind your watch fully once a day to a full stop and don't worry about mainspring.
