It is perfectly true that the OP watch has been redialled, and not wonderfully, but it is not true to say that only the coat hanger S is correct for the 2846 or many other 50s Omegas. There was a rounded S seen also but it is different to the later version. Here is an example (also a 2846) but there are plenty of others if you search, including on earlier 2577s where a slightly different form is seen.

I'm new at this as well. the site above will be helpful. There's a pdf that shows case number and caliber correct matching to the year and lot's of other information. It's a bit overwhelming but fun too. In case you didn't know, your dial (again, I'm still a newbie) might contain Radium - I just wanted to let you know. Some collectors seek it out, some don't care, some would not want it...just thought you should know.

Thanks for an incredible link!!
Thats a couple of years for reading and learning!

True, could the flat top S also occur on this reference?

I'm not certain to be honest, but there is certainly more variation in the S design in the 50s than perhaps some would assume, with maybe 4 or 5 distinct styles seen.

There are v shaped wells at the outside ends of the index markers. Originally these would have held a small amount of Radium based lume before it was repainted but seem to be empty now. Look at the gold watch I posted above, that dial is original and has the same style of markers with intact radium lume in the wells and hands.
