Help identifying mid-50s Seamaster cal. 490 - FX 6040

Hi everyone, I’m currently considering buying this vintage Seamaster and was hoping to get some opinions before moving forward.

It’s a Seamaster Automatic with small seconds, powered by cal. 490. The inside caseback is stamped FX 6040. What has me hesitating is that I haven’t been able to find another example matching this exact combination. It has a silver dial with recessed small seconds at 6, applied faceted markers, a signed Omega crown, and what looks to me like the classic “coat hanger S” in the Seamaster script.

I’ve found similar mid-50s Seamasters and a few watches with the same dial configuration, but I haven’t been able to locate another FX 6040 with this dial in this case. The crown especially stood out to me. On the few FX 6040 examples or references I’ve managed to come across, I haven’t found another with this same signed crown, which made me wonder whether it could actually be original to this watch, a period-correct Omega service replacement, or something that was changed later on.

The dial also seems unusual in the sense that I haven’t found another FX 6040 combining these faceted markers with the coat hanger S Seamaster script. It all feels coherent for the period, but I haven’t been able to match the exact configuration anywhere.

Before I decide on it, I wanted to ask whether anyone here has come across a similar example before, and whether this dial/crown combination looks right to you for a mid-1950s Seamaster. Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

As always, thank you very much! 😁

IMO, that is a replacement crown originally intended for a Constellation. The pictures of the dial are very compressed, so I cannot tell much about the dial.

It was typical for Omega to make dozens of different dial styles for a single case reference. So I’m not surprised that you cannot find a match to that one.
