That’s a bugger. Could try Stefan Stefansson at Vintage Watch Fever @ursmidur

Congrats on the watch @Revo, I can relate to the feeling stupid part as I once dropped a movement and broke its balance staff in my watchmaker’s workshop, as I was trying to find a good spot to take a picture. 🤦

It was a good lesson for me.
Hope you’ll soon have it back to enjoy.

Watches can stop after being dropped for different reasons. I would be surprised if the balance staff is broken. If I had to guess, I would say that the dial has shifted from the drop, and is binding on the hour wheel...I’ve seen this several times in dropped watches.

These watches are very robust, so I suspect that it won’t take much more than a regular service to sort this out.

Cheers, Al

From what I have learned in my short year of amateur watchmaking, it could just be something now misaligned etc. or maybe not. Not much help without opening it up and looking at it.
A reputable guy will have it up and running in no time though. Don’t fret. Think of it this way, it was due for a service anyway, right?

After I brought it home, I did laundry with my 2998-6 on my wrist. Into a rice bag and a full service far sooner than I had budgeted for.

Damn. Having established that it needs a service now, has at least the case survived?

This brings to mind your threads on the dog bite and being run over by a car.

Still, my long-awaited, and very newly-acquired Speedy is dead.
I'm sure these owners thought their Speedies were dead too 😉 A service will do your watch good 👍 But, that really does suck and I sympathize with you 🤔

This is why everyone should have a jar of rice at the ready! A rubber mallet is another favorite to have at the ready, but not sure it would help the OP’s Speedy….or could depending on mood.

Thanks everyone. It’s heading off for a service later today. As some of you have said, it’s a good excuse to have it looked at anyway.

I appreciate all your kind words.

Hope you all have a good 2022

Aw no, sorry to hear that Ollie! Another recommendation for Simon (Freese) here. Maybe bung an email to Richard Askham as well, it doesn't look like he has he has worked on any Speedmasters in his blog however he does have experience on a good number of chronographs:

Edit: Just seen that you've arranged a service 👍

Good news is that the Speedmaster appears not be damaged (eg broken balance staff) just dry and dirty. My watchmaker got it running, albeit sluggishly. I left it with him for a service. So hopefully no parts needed just a good clean and oil. He was certainly optimistic and says he loves working on 861s so I’m feeling more positive.

Other than costing you a service, which it probably needed, I wouldn’t worry. Unless you throw your Speedmaster in a trash compactor, it’s extremely hard to “kill” a Speedmaster.
