And we have a winner! You win your bet .You are correct as to the 820. The import code is HXW so points there as well. Sadly someone cut the lugs. Which is too bad as this has a good balance and would be a great candidate for restoration. Even with the wrecked case this is high on my lists of practice watches to clean and service. I am sure I have a paperclip somewhere...
The number stamped into the case is 1007. The dirt makes it look like there are other digits. Do not see any accessible serial number.
I have been wondering if there might be a way to weld on material for a new lug. I got some nickel rod to experiment with case re-plating.
It looks like the lugs had female pins. Cutting them was not a great way to remove the strap. I have a lot of cases, and was considering re casing this as I like the dial. Of course that would make it a franken. I doubt finding a case will be practical.
I am growing fond of these black dial watches. I just added a delBana. I also found most of an Elgin A11 and have been watching for the proper hands on that. There must have been a point where I was targeting black dial watches.
I bet you anything that the Helbros with the black dial at the top right has a Helvetia 820 movement in it though! Probably 820B. And probably Helvetia case ref 3190?
I'd be interested in the details, serial number, movement confirmation etc if you have them. These were a batch of watches made for Helbros by Helvetia during the war and I am doing some research into Helvetia's exports to the US at this time.
Thanks. Carl.
