ahh....., you want the springloaded ring, that fits into the groove on the back. many years ago we had them manufactured in india on request of members of the vintage watch forum. but all gone long ago. hard to find...... use a rubber ring in the meantime. kind regards. achim

Too bad to hear that these rings are hard to find. Are they specific for the railmaster or could they be found on any other reference?

When you say use a rubber ring, would that be like an o-ring in the same diameter as the groove on the inside of the caseback?

no, just something that stays in place and stops the rattling, when the case back is tightened. and if you find the correct crown, I`d need 2 more as well. kind regards. achim

So it turned out my local watchmaker had a few spare 45008 crowns in stock, I will try to secure a couple for you Achim!

However, does anyone know what part number the springloaded ring might have? He was going to try and fins one for me but needed the number!

I've seen the metal spring ring on several different references - of course with different sizes, but have not seen any part number for them on any of the independent suppliers. Maybe Al could help here?

Edit: Scratch this sentence: "A rubber o-ring may help securing the movement, but it would likely touch and interfere with the crown stem."

BTW: when delivered from the factory, like the military 1953, most had a special moisture absorbing paper disc inside..... kind regards. achim

Looks like it might require some effort to find that ring then, hoping my watchmaker will be able to find one for me!
Thanks for the input on the paper disc @watchyouwant but that sounds like it might not be the easiest part to source either...

Just wanted to let you know that the Railmaster has now been dropped off at the watchmaker. He'll change the crystal, change the crown and give the movement a complete overhaul.

I'll let you know when I get it back!

Another question for you guys: Does anyone know if the bezel is fitted the same way as on the Speedster, eg. friction fit? I'm just curious to know whether I can take it off myself without the crystal popping out etc.?

Looks like I'm the only one interested in keeping this thread alive but just wanted to let you know what the watch looks like now that it's back from service=)

First of all, huge thanks to @MSNWatch for providing a period correct crown for my 2914, forever grateful!

Here's a first picture of the watch in its current shape on a shell cordovan strap. I'll try to provide some more pictures if anyone's interested.
The watch received a complete movement service and a crystal replacement. Other than that the worst gauges on the case got taken down ever so slightly, all and all the case is pretty untouched and still looks very beaten up=)

Awesome watch. I just read the entire thread. Great story! I hope I can give watches to grandchildren someday and the watches are treated with the same respect you have shown.

I agree. Don't polish it. Every mark was made by your grandfather....look at a new scratch every day and just imagine what he was doing when the watch was dinged!
