Innes Ireland:

I got a chance to have a talk with Innes at the Knockhill race meeting on the 25th anniversary of Jim Clark's death. There had been a dinner for the special guests the previous evening at which they were presented a bottle of commemorative specially blended "Jim Clark" whisky. I was given one too for working on the organisation of the event, but not an invitation to the dinner. I asked Innes if he'd tried the whisky yet and he told me he'd finished the bottle overnight!

I kept mine waiting for a special event and opened it on the day of my official retirement. Very, very nice 😀

Love your stories @MRC 😀

Thank you.

Here's another from the same weekend. It was a three day event with the formal re-opening of the refurbished Jim Clark Room on Friday, open day on Saturday and the race meeting on Sunday. My job on Friday and Saturday was to marshal the display cars and keep an eye on them. The cars were all types connected with Jim, Lotus 49 from the Donington Museum, Lotus-Cortina, D-type, Elans, etc. I was standing by the 49 when a policeman approached and asked if we were going to fire it up. I explained that it didn't belong to us and I had not seen anyone who would know how to. But....

.... on Saturday a friend of mine was coming with his Lotus 22 Formula Junior and knowing him it would be immaculately prepared and ready to go. And he would definitely be prepared to fire it up. Great says the policeman, would he drive it round the town too? On Saturday when Malcolm Ricketts arrives with his car I explain the "request" and of course he's up for it. We check again that this is going to be OK, Malcolm fires it up and does three or four laps of the town centre. Those Cosworth MAE "screamer" engines make a hell of a noise even when driven slowly enough to get through the crowds and the the unsuspecting shoppers on the main street.

Half an hour later the policeman comes up again with a piece of paper. He explains that it is a list of the offences committed, but that the police were not going to prosecute "due to lack of witnesses". Only many hundreds 😁

All gone now 🙁

And bringing us bang up to date, here is an FIA official after Fp1 in Abu Dhabi 2021, the season showdown with the two main protagonists only separated by race wins, as he sports a Breitling Aerospace Titanium (F75362?)

Graham Hill (Gold Leaf Team Lotus), 1969 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort

And in front of it is the unloved Lotus 63 4WD which Hill refused to race and poor John Miles managed 1 lap in the race before having to retire.
