Gshock help for nephew

We have these shopping for children threads periodically so now it’s my turn.

I visited with my sister in CA this last week and spent some time with my teenage nephews. The younger of the two is 15, 6’4, and about 280lbs (mostly muscle). He is in the scouts (on path to eagle), discovered the gym in the last year, works out 5 days a week and is a typical active teenager.
We were out shopping at an antique mall and there was the display of fashion and vintage junk watches in a display case- he was immediately attracted to a white Marc Jacobs plastic POS with little diamonds on the dial (he looked past some decent 60’s pieces and a nice Clebar Chrono). I had to totally restrain myself from vomiting and then shitting on the watch- this is what he likes, it wasn’t ungodly overpriced, so let’s be supportive that he is showing an interest in watches (my wife was very proud of me restraining my snobbery).

We took the watch home and he asked me to help him give it a scrub (good, he wants to know how to clean a watch) and set the time (it has an analog dial- so glad my sister taught him to tell time).
Obviously this Marc Jacobs plastic POS is not suited for his outdoor teenage lifestyle, I told him it’s fine for casual wear but not for sports/gym.

I know nothing about Casio (my last Casio was when I was 12 years old) and I want to send him (Amazon is easiest) a G-shock he can wear for heavy duty at the gym/scouts/teen shenanigans and beat the shit out of it. He clearly likes an analog dial, but for gym etc a digital counter could be useful. He is 6’4 and thickly built so a larger watch would probably be appropriate. I have read some G-shocks have poor backlighting due to various LED colors (apparently the red colored ones). As he does Scouts- night lighting is important. Lastly I would like to keep it under $100 if possible.
Any recommendations on a specific model?

I've had a GA110 for over 10 years now. They have a handful of different color variations.
They can be had on Amazon and for under $100.
Haven't worn it for years though. Battery is dead. No lume and the backlight was trash if I remember correctly.

I believe I had just received my Nikkor 50mil and was testing it out, hence this portrait of it haha.

Not a G Shock expert by any stretch, but I like the GA 2100 "CasioOak." Analog dial and date indicator, and a bunch of digital features (stopwatch, timer, world time, time, etc) albeit on a smaller bit of dial real estate. Plus, they come in a variety of colors and can be had for under $100 all day long mostly online. Oh, and you can go to any local mall and there will be at least a few stores that carry them so you can see them in the met...er, plastic!
Apologies for the crappy pics. I use mine for beater/exercise/dirty jobs duty.

There are so many G-Shocks available, but if your gating factor is an analog dial then your choices get trimmed down significantly.

All sorts of possibilities depending on what kinds of colors and features your nephew might like. Honestly for his use case I wouldn't be too worried about backlighting quality/color - just lump that in with the other personal preferences IMO.

God tier choice my friend. Can't go wrong here. Ga2100 is the perfect low cost ani-digi. I have the green one, my son has the blue camo one, and they now so Bluetooth and solar. No brainier for a lifetime watch. I'll text you some links if you want. 😀

I don't know much about the G-Shock world but I have an old digital Casio that is very similar that is my go to beater. I've trashed this thing for 12 years and only replaced the band once when it ripped in half. I bought a blacked out G-Shock once and sold it because it was too big for my taste and the inverted display was impossible to read at night. So, my suggestions...

1. Do NOT get one with an inverted digital display if you want to read it at night (ie. black background and light numbers). Example below.
2. Go solar so he never has to worry about batteries.

BAD:

DW-6900 is very popular with the military.

To me, sounds like your nephew needs the King of King G-Shocks:

The Mudmaster (anything smaller will look sorta ridiculous on a human that size -- whereas anything that large looks completely asinine on a human my size -- see photos for evidence)...

Keep the ideas coming guys. Sorting through the Casio models is like trying to shop for jeans…so many to choose from and some suck.

$800 for what is best described as a "Enlarged tumor laden Oreo that's been partially eaten by rabid squirrels on a Meth bender."
Oddly the G-Shock folks removed my review from their website.

That thing looks like it's made to catch as much mud as possible, not to resist it.

I would consider a pro-trek with additional sensors that he can use as a scout. It's above your budget at $135, and not analog at this price range:

$800!? Bro, what were you thinking? That's the type of watch you gotta sell, but you feel bad selling it because you just want to tell the poor bastard buying it that they're making a horrible life decision.

I’ve had horrible life decision purchases I just gave away because I didn’t want that karma coming back on me.
