Agreed, it’s the interval of 10 minutes between sets that gets me…
"Excuse me. How many more sets do you have?" also gets them to workout faster.

My routine is gym 3 days a week lifting and sauna, pickleball Fridays and weekends and rowing on a Concept2 at home. Been maintaining this since later last year and feel the strongest and healthiest for 15 yrs. No alcohol for over 2 years helps as well.

I actually miss the social interaction with real human beings in the flesh. I used to make gym friends chatting between sets.

I miss this too. In my 20s, there was an incredible black iron gym in the basement of a middle school 3 blocks down from us. It was built by a former teacher at the school who had been an Olympic weightlifter. It got grandfathered into some obscure local ordinance and was volunteer run (dues were $100 a year!).

It was frequented by some relatively serious oly lifters, powerlifters, strongman athletes, and bodybuilders and I had some great gym friends at the time. Everyone was very encouraging and helpful, and were there to train seriously.

I don't think I'll ever have access to such a cool place again. 🙁

Assuming they don’t think I’m an inpatient, grumpy old prick. Which would make them right for the wrong reason.

I do it all the time if someone is taking forever on a machine.

+1
But my gripe is their in-ear headphones - now, as well as sizing up how they might respond to a polite fellow-user, you need to do it all in mime. Knowing there's a chance they can still hear you...
😜 I'm probably just sublimating a general anti-teenage kid gripe here, sorry!
[Routine/week - Tennis x3, boxing x 2, circuit x2, bigger weights x1, cardio bike x1. Results? 😗 Mrs O'D says it keeps me away from beer and out of trouble. And if my tennis keeps improving at this rate, I could win the Open in about 150 years time.]

This is what I see in gyms now; drives me nuts.

Not nearly as strange as taking photos of other dudes at the gym...NTTAWWT if that’s what turns your crank...😉

Not nearly as strange as looking at that photo, and that being your assessment…

I dunno, I take long rests up to 10-12 min between max effort attempts. Maybe they're prepping for a Power Curl championship?

Bad on me; that’s it for sure.

Has anyone joined one of the "lifestyle"* clubs fitness centers? Like the country clubs of working out. Find it any better than LA Fitness etc in the long run? Are they just as crowded and annoying I guess is my question. Believe its called lifestyle out here in CA.

I'm 43 and started taking fitness more seriously a couple of years ago, since I wanted to set a better example for my 9 year old son. Initially we had only a single floor standing pull-up bar (which he also loved), but now our "gym" has evolved based on whatever we find fun. My routine is mostly doing bodyweight exercises, calisthenics and hanging.

I changed my diet a lot. Started eating clean/high protein and ditched alcohol + processed foods/sugars. Estimated Vo2 max started around 22 and is about 57 now. I do a mix of walk/run every morning for an hour, which is relaxed walking with some sprint intervals and stair climbing.

I'd been lurking in this thread for ages, so figured it was time to contribute something 😀

That's super impressive to me. I've trained heavy for years but don't have a lot of variety in my routine. Earlier this year I spent the afternoon doing monkey bars with my kid and I had forgotten how hard they are when you are an adult, let alone all the different movements you're doing up there!

Yeah, kids make monkey bars look deceptively easy! My kid can go for ages and doesn't need any recovery days.

Hanging seems to activate pretty specific muscle groups, so even if someone is strong they're not necessarily good at one-arm hanging and dumping their weight on to one side.

I find this strange considering you first gave up drinking..........most people need to drink shitloads to end up swinging from the chandeliers!

I recently got into cycling and have done 3 century rides in last 6 months! I also do some kickboxing for cardio and light strength training.
This picture was taken at my first century rides finish line..

I used to be a bike racer I stopped when knee damage made it too painful . I still ride 200ks a week on my outdated road bike. This 14 year old machine has been rebuilt from top to bottom and goes better than the day it was made.
