What is your opinion on high-end Yellow Gold watches. Are yellow gold watches still in style? Or in 2020 are they considered tacky? Personally, I can't envision wearing yellow gold, although if it were the 80's I probably would. Late 90's, 00's,10's have been about platinum, white gold, stainless and maybe a little bit of yellow gold accents. Yellow gold will likely have it's day again, but are we there yet?

Gold works, but only on smaller dress watches, IMO. If it's a large sports watch, gold is ostentatious.

Moreover, the price inflation for a gold watch over the steel version is generally far too much compared to the actual cost of the materials. You are paying more for the status of a gold watch, not the actual material.

I never liked gold watches but ended up with a gold capped Seamaster from the early 60's.
A smaller dress watch like @Donn Chambers suggested..but it is not overly gold, especially with the brown leather band I have on it.
I think there is definitely a time and a place for them. They may not be as in style as they used to be but I would not consider them to be out of style.

They're expensive. I have always found that I favor rose gold or white gold watches over yellow gold as I don't believe yellow gold to be as an attractive color... a little too harsh. I do own a few gold watches, even some in yellow gold, which seldom see my wrist as I just don't find many occasions to get dressed up. I don't believe yellow gold is no longer in fashion, but, rather a personal choice. All the high end watch brands still offer yellow gold watches.

A fine suit and a gold watch are still in style.
Cargo shorts and a gold watch probably not.
But age, wealth, job has a big bearing also.

See all walks of life at an airport on the occasional job there and there are plenty of times I see that it doesn’t look right, but mostly it is worn in the right way to look good.

I have a YG sub, black dial that I bought as a retirement gift to myself. My employer wasn't about to do so. I like it. I put it on a rubber strap to preserve the bracelet. I don't give a Tinker's Cuss whether anyone else thinks it's appropriate, or otherwise. I like it and that is all that matters. Plus, I got a year's severance pay so it was paid for several times over. (I was laid off when they dumped Oracle, but I was retirement age....)

Gold. Love them. Like the Inca, pharaohs, Aztec, conquistadors, Chinese emperors. Most valuable treasures from their tombs that last an eternity

I prefer rose gold to yellow gold although antique yellow gold can develop a pleasing patina. I also agree that it needs to be a sub 38mm dressier watch even in a chronograph. I agree that hard core sports watches in gold are not my taste but I think the gold speedmaster totally works. As far as wearing them. Dress em down with a more casual strap and they are fine to wear with a polo and jeans.

I have no clue where the industry is going, but I find large gold watches to be jarring, or maybe it’s just a swagger I can’t pull off. I never had an interest in wearing a gold watch, until I found this cheap and cheerful 1950 Gruen. To me, it’s full of charm

Only two things not mentioned yet is:

Mixed gold with steel - really like the Santos De Cartier take on the mix.

Skin Tone - some tones don’t work well with gold. You can tell by the colour of your veins.

Otherwise, I agree with many sentiments here.
Rose gold is my preference. Sub 38mm for gold and dressier except with some exemptions like the Omega Speedmaster. And some people by their style or standing in life can just pull off gold well.

My Seamaster Pro Diver 300m in SS, and my 2 Seamaster 300's one in Sedna Gold with SS and the other in Yellow Gold with SS

To me the Gold pops nicely...better than a gold/SS Sub or Daytona...

Gold, I love gold watches, call me old school but to me a gold watch is a dress watch in reality.
IMHO a tool watch in gold is just for those who want to say “hey look at me” but a dress watch in gold says “Style and appreciate quality”
Tastes change, personally I prefer rose gold. I think yellow gold can be a bit garish especially on a bracelet though I think it depends on the watch, a Rolex day date in yellow gold on bracelet or Constellation de luxe being good examples of what works

Vintage gold watches usually make sense as they are often a reflection of a certain time period. Also, the smaller size, slimmer gold watches seem to work well whether they are modern or vintage. The debate seems to arise with larger sport watches which aren't as popular (at this moment in time) whether this is due to price, appearance, or both. Trends change and yellow gold has mostly been a timeless metal notwithstanding the last few decades where it's fallen out of favor. So, we'll see!

Funny that working at a airport every now and then and the gold Nixon is the most common watch seen on young guys in their 20s. Not gold but if your got young guys wearing these it can’t be that out of favour.
