I’ve had two straps give out on me recently, one old crocodile strap that melted off my wrist at my sweltering workplace during our hotter-than-usual September and one leather rally strap that came apart because, I suspect, it’s overpriced garbage. What kind of glue works for this type of repair? Some kind of vegetable-based thing? What do you recommend?

I use fabric adhesive found at Hobby Lobby. Clear and flexible. Sticks in seconds. Semi permanent.

I use Barge all purpose. Apply on both pieces and keep them apart for about 90 seconds, then press together. This is what I use on watch straps. You can buy it on Amazon and at shoe repair shops.

If I need something super strong I use Freesole (now called Aquaseal). Wear latex gloves and eye protection with this. It is powerful.

I use a breathing mask with both types.

And as DanS explains below, keep clamped together (24 hours for the Aquaseal) and less for the Barge… much less if I stitch.

There are a few brands that are used for leather crafting, like Seiwa, Tandy, or Fibings. Good thing about these is that they flex with the leather.

@Duracuir1 knows best, contact cement just as he described. it's also how you install straps with flaps on watches with fixed lugs. It's good to clamp the pieces together for a while.

Getting the old glue off is key with leather re-gluing. Bit of sandpaper in a high grit like 800 will do the trick 😉

What kind of mask would be useful for working with Barge?

Do you think that my He-Man mask is woefully underrated for the task then?

I can also use my Super Fantastic @DaveK cap to filter the fumes.
