Is vintage Hamilton considered quality? BTW, Spruce, I like the watch in your picture. And thank you.
With Hamilton, the older, the better. But they tend to be small. You can find almost all Hamilton catalogs here:

Although the Grade 770 manual-wind, made in the 1950’s and 1960’s was one of the best they ever made.

Your knowledge amazes me. I feel like a little leaguer in the middle of an All Star game.

Hey spruce, since price isn't a factor then sell the guy the watch in your avatar and make him happy will ya? 😁

Thanks for the compliment - nearly all my watches are 34/34.5 with sunburst dials. Hand wound Longines and Omega are still not badly priced - if you look carefully. If you’re still set on a GP, have a look at the GP Gyromatic.

I’ve just bought this Gyromatic from forum member @seekingseaquest and am (excitedly) awaiting delivery. (The photos are Phil's).

If I were starting out, knowing what I now know rather than being the lucky idiot I was when I first realised I could afford an Omega on eBay, I’d be looking at stainless steel 166.041 with a 565 movement or 165.041 with a 552 movement.

If I were feeling a little more extravagant and confident, and with my tastes unchanged, I’d be looking for stainless steel Seamasters, 165 or 166 .002, 003 and/or .010.

Oh man you just had to get the guy going again didn't you! That's way too many choices. Never mind as I will now attempt to broker a deal on the Longines Grand Prize.

Actually, @Bencherman, if you’re thinking of passing on an heirloom, you can still buy one of these Longines Conquest Heritage 35mm new, complete with box and papers and warranty, in either black or silver dial for £920.

They’re generally available and will add to your dilemma. 😉

The brand per watch rankings is in the second category(above rolex omega etc) but have read doesnt hold value that well. But if you like vintages and price is reasonable why not?

That Seahawk that Gatorcpa posted is a nice watch for the $$.

There were a couple seemingly true NOS Seahawks on ebay a while back and they were $1000. Minty is rare and expensive.

I have a GP Calatrava and love it. They are cool watches.

A GP Calatrava knockoff...sorry...
There is no such thing. “Calatrava” is a trademark of Patek Philippe.

It simply annoys me to see this. Like seeing the words “Ford Corvette” together.

I thought the shopping process for a vintage watch might be as enjoyable as the experience I had when I shopped for my new Tudor BB Chronograph. That was a cinch (I hope I didn't pay a "newbie tax" on that). I appreciate your patience with my questions (feel free to ignore me if it becomes too much).
Still dying to see that wrist shot. You lucky chap.
