George Lazenby: the under-appreciated, and misunderstood Bond...

It's been a few decades since I've read any of the books - it's on my list of things to do, which keeps getting longer and longer. 😀 I do remember really liking "Octopussy and The Living Daylights" but I also might have liked it for other reasons too. Need to re-read.

Read them all not too long ago. I think I have to agree my favs are Casino Royale or From Russia With Love....maybe You Only Live Twice as well.

OHMSS was a pretty good Bond movie. Not quite as good as Sean Connery's best, but better than Connery's later going through the motions phase (Man with the Golden Gun, Diamonds Are Forever)

You would have to admit, Connery was doing a dead-on impersonation of Roger Moore in Man with the Golden Gun...

Thanks much for posting this.. It's spurred me to do some further research and am finding it very interesting. I remember I saw this film as a kid, but don't remember anything about it. Guess it's time to run to the video store.
Have a great day,
Tom
You'll find the "whole series" box set on EBay: I did and we watch one every six weeks or so.

Rodger Moore was never James Bond, he was Simon Templar impersonating James Bond, and not doing a very good job of it.

Lazenby was not at all bad in the role, but too much of a come down from Connery. If Lazenby had been the first to play the part he could have evolved into it and made it his own, but he still wouldn't have been as good as Connery.
Timothy Dalton was very good in the role, but a bit too slender at the time. If he had hit the gym and bulked up just a little he would have looked the part.

The Craig films are a lot more grim than the previous films and his dour demeanor suits the role as written and directed.
One must remember that Bond above all else is a Stone Killer that lets it all hang out because he doesn't really care if he lives or dies so long as he gets the job done.

The Bond movies have evolved so much since Pierce Brosnan... Lazenby had a tough job taking the role after Connery, and you know how the public can criticize when you change their habit.

I think Daniel Craig did a pretty good job with his role by giving a rude aspect of Bond, well depicted in his early career.

Dalton was the closest bond character to the actual books.

My vote for number two on the under-appreciated Bond portrayal list. His depiction was very close to the books, having read many of them as research for the character, but somehow failed to really gain traction with the audience.

Probably because the audience had gotten used to the general campiness of Moore's Bond.

First time I saw Craig was in an episode of "Tales From the Crypt" HBO TV series. He played a small time thug who got what he deserved in the end.

As well as the films having pretty crappy plots. The one with the drug cartel revenge theme was horrible, easily the least Bond-ish Bond film, IMO.

I really liked Dalton and his two movies. The plots were believable as opposed the typical "Dr. Evil" plots.

I wonder if OHMSS will one day get a remake, a la Casino Royale, as a series re-boot.

Seems likely, as they have used up all the titles of the Fleming books but the films continue to make money.

If not old George I wonder who else was in the running...….
James Brolin and there is video of the Screen test. Which you might remember the exact scene from OHMSS

If he had been cast in the role there would be Bond Boys instead of Bond Girls.
