For the old pros on this site a Forstner is nothing new, so nothing to see here. For the newer Omega enthusiasts like myself, I had never seen one in the metal, but had certainly read about them. When this barely used bracelet became available on the Bay for a $100 bucks I bought it. I finally got around to trying it out tonight, and I have a couple of observations.
It is quite well-made, not quite as tight as the ref. 1498/840 that came on this watch, but respectable. It fits the lug spaces very well, even though this was listed as for an SMP. Having made the swap I wish the center links were polished, but that is a taste thing. In the threads I have read repeatedly that some members wish the factory bracelet was all brushed, so that is covered on this model. What really stands out for me is the clasp. I have more than a few bracelet watches, and this clasp operates flawlessly...just the right amount of everything, and I really appreciate all the micro adjustments. Included is a shot of this watch with the original bracelet, for comparison.
There is always something, and this one thing is at the same time trivial and disconcerting. The bracelet is entirely solid, cast or billet---but the end link that goes into the adjustment side of the clasp is sheet that has been rolled into a tube, 60s-70s style. It isn't a deal breaker, but after putting all that effort into making a quality product why cut a corner at the very end? And I am not sure that this is a current model.
Overall a better than most bracelet. Now I am going to get an Uncle Seiko just to see how it stacks up against Forstner. I will sport this for a bit, but I personally prefer the original, and it is nice to be able to change it up once in awhile.
