For those who send watches using FedEx - a question:

They always as me at the counter if the contents are fragile. What do you all say? Upside or downside to saying it is? Thanks.

I ship using my Parcel Pro account using both FedEx and UPS; as a best practice I double box using new cardboard which is a requirement for the package insurance; I do not put any special markings on the outside box (again, required for insurance purposes) as I do not want to draw any special attention to the parcel. I print the label myself at home and then dropoff the package at my main FedEx shipping location in my city. I can't recall ever being asked my the counter staff any questions about fragile or not. Bottom line, I doubt "FRAGILE" actually makes a baggage thrower any more cautious. I package my items assuming its going to be tossed around, and I'd rather the package be completely stealth and go overnight with as little chance as possible for being stolen.

Excellent. Many thanks.

When I Fedex’ed my Omega Speedmaster I packed tighter than a drum. Figure it would survive a direct hit hit from a 10 megaton nuke.

Only things I do not state is “fragile” “jewelry” “ watch”

I also didn’t name the destination business as “such and such fine watch repair”

Service Dept sufficed. That is my story and I’m sticking too it

In 2009 my wife and I were returning from Puerto Rico. A fellow passenger had bought a bottle of rum and had it carefully packaged - it was labelled « Fragile » and could not be brought as carry-on.

From my window seat I watched the loading crew as they stacked everyone’s checked luggage. The crew actually handled the fragile package of rum with great care. They set the package aside and the rum was the last item to be placed in the luggage compartment.

On arrival in Detroit, the luggage hatch was opened by the crew, the fragile rum package was picked up and tossed onto the luggage wagon, with all other suitcases and bags thrown over top.

The last item to come out on the luggage carousel was the leaky and severely dented « fragile » package.

This does not answer your question, but others have done so nicely anyway.

Easy

You always pack a watch so it can be dropped out at 10,000 ft to the recipient.

Since watches are small and actually fairly sturdy, I find it pretty easy to pack them well enough to handle rough treatment. I never mark a package FRAGILE.

You should also pack it in a larger box. It is harder to hide and walk-off with a big box.

I said no at the post office, but probably just out of habit. I doubt fragile means anything to shippers.

I bubble wrap the watch so it has about 2 inches on each side.

I believe the standard FedEx insurance max is $1,000 (for jewelry, which I assume watches fall under?). They will let you pay for more but their policy only applies to $1000, which is a bit shady. They also have a specific high value jewelry service.

Not for “one off” shipments and pretty sure the fine print says “Not Watches”somewhere….

Actually, it lists watches and watch movements, but you're right, it's "Not available for one-time or occasional jewelry shipments." Too bad, I got my hopes up briefly.

I assume that this is the type of account that many dealers and watchmakers have with FedEx. Of course, they can also use ParcelPro.

Fragile (rhymes with Chile) is a far away country and packages need to be thrown extra hard to get there.

Just had Fedex supposedly "deliver" a watch to my house that "I" signed for at 9:54 am when I was at work all day, and my cameras show no truck ever approached my gate or home. The signature is a single squiggle. The tracking shows delivered and I have opeend up a case. This happened to me once before and the item came the next day randomly.., if I don't get lucky again and it doesn't appear tomorrow, I'm out $2k

I've had this happen - with both Fedex and UPS. Packages got to me the next day or two, so don't give up hope yet - fingers crossed for ya. Smart to go ahead an open a claim. 👍

Post script: you never know what the fine folks at FedEx are going to ask. In the past, it’s always about whether it’s “fragile.”

Today, an obnoxious and dismissive rep took my parcel, and asked, “A general description of the merchandise.” The bubble above my head: “It’s a collectible, Omega pre-moon, cal. 321 Speedmaster that it would behoove you to steal, you dead-beat, low-life, cretin…”

Me: “It’s a few pens.” Geez…

You should describe it as an instrument used to measure units of time.

I recall reading exactly this on an incoming piece and thought two things: "Very true, that's precisely what's in this package" and "I bet the person I purchased this from is an Engineer"!
