For those who send watches using FedEx - a question:

FedEx has been a nightmare around here for several months, both for delivery and shipping. If it were my money - or watch, as it may be - I certainly wouldn't ship with FedEx. UPS continues to be solid, even if they are the more expensive option.

Otherwise, the advice given thus far is solid.

During the holiday season 9 out of 11 packages that were shipped to me via FedEx arrived late. Obviously high shipping volume was an issue but they were particularly bad. UPS delivered everything on time as did USPS.

Sounds about right, unfortunately. In the past few months, both packages shipped to me were late - one by a full seven days. Apparently, the regional sorting facilities are understaffed and almost everything gets caught in the wash.

In a recent investor call, the CEO of FedEx made mention of hiring challenges, among others, so it stands to reason things aren't great with that company. From the cheap seats, it appears that it's more than shipping volume with FedEx.

"As this pandemic continues, we at FedEx are finding it increasingly difficult to find people willing to work in close proximity to multiple customers throughout the day during an epidemic and who are willing to work for the minimum wages that we refuse to raise so that our employees can afford to live, all the while we change their schedules weekly with little notice and don't offer two days off in a row. As such, the few employees we do have must work long hours understaffed with failing equipment and no management support. We thank you for your understanding."

I wouldn't blame them if they dropped a package or two.

I was talking to an Amazon delivery driver about this back in December and he said most of the FedEx drivers he encountered were miserable.

Ugh FedEx ::facepalm1:: My most recent shipment I had sent to the UPS store by me and that worked out very well, I'd do that in the future for sure.

I think it is location dependent, I've had no issues with FedEx, UPS, DHL or USPS over the last 18 months or so here in TX. I had one DHL parcel scheduled one day last November but by 6pm I had given up on it, but at 9:30 pm I got a phone call from our front gate asking for the entry code. Long day for that driver, and he was based out of San Antonio, 60+ minutes away.

It seems that most in the Portland area don’t want to work. While it’s easy to blame a big, evil corporation; it’s likely the combination of a number of things, including the working conditions.

And overly generous, and for too long, benefits allowing potential workers to loaf at home. Many factors here.

I absolutely hate FedEx, they suck. I've had multiple packages delayed by the local office incompetence. Several packages have made it from the east coast to the Rockies in two days only to sit at the local office for 5-6 days before they even attempt delivery. Then tracking will show it out for delivery for two days, then back at local hub, then back out for delivery, then back at the hub and so on. Never again.

It's more this than anything. It's human nature to pick a side and it seems that now, it's either some evil corporation or workers that don't wish to work. It's usually a combo of that, plus a dozen other factors.

I'm in a populated area (Washington D.C.) and our deliveries are fairly constant. We do on occasion see our Postal Carrier much later than usual though. Hop an hour and a half north of me to the family farm and UPS and FedEx are again fairly consistent, but USPS is a complete mess. Their daily delivery of mail is now showing up every 7-9 days! This is mainly driven by lack of resources and the latest wave of C19 knocking Carriers out of circulation

Back to the OP question. No, I don't see 'Fragile' marked on any incoming pieces, and if I were to ship I would not mark it. Bullet proof packaging is key, well wrapped in bubble, taped, placed in a box and fitted with packaging materials to ensure it's not sloshing about, and placing that box in a bigger box properly fitted with materials again...this is quality.

Or you could pack it like a piece I snagged from a consignment shop in Florida...dropped in a simple letter envelope and chucked in the mail! ::facepalm1::

I'm always using strong plastic containers for watches. It's just 2€ extra. But, it can easily take 100kg weight on top of it.
So, watch in that box, inside of bubble wrap. This container is wrapped into bubble wrap again. Then some foam inside the carton box. Usually describe the content as a "precision instrument". Always shipping with DHL Express, unless the buyer wants cheaper shipping. Insurance from Secursus.

Never used fragile markings.

In 2009 my wife and I were returning from Puerto Rico. A fellow passenger had bought a bottle of rum and had it carefully packaged - it was labelled « Fragile » and could not be brought as carry-on.

From my window seat I watched the loading crew as they stacked everyone’s checked luggage. The crew actually handled the fragile package of rum with great care. They set the package aside and the rum was the last item to be placed in the luggage compartment.

On arrival in Detroit, the luggage hatch was opened by the crew, the fragile rum package was picked up and tossed onto the luggage wagon, with all other suitcases and bags thrown over top.

The last item to come out on the luggage carousel was the leaky and severely dented « fragile » package.

This does not answer your question, but others have done so nicely anyway.


The most important thing here is….direct flight from PR to Detroit!!!!! I wish that was a thing as I live here and my son in PR and have to fly always through NY, Washington, Orlando or Texas. Pain in the ass!
