AC brought me back into the fold. I miss them. My turntable and CM10 speakers came from there. Very happy that ABT has stepped up. My other B&W, Rotel gear and CD players came from them. Crutchfield in a pinch. There is however no replacement for their (Audio Consultants) listening rooms or their great trade up program. I also mourn the loss of Needle Doctor, another retirement.
yes, Needle Doctor -- that was the place for vinyl enthusiasts -- lots of affordable gear, accessories.

Needle doctor was a huge loss, it was one stop shopping for those of us who serviced vintage tables. LP Gear was ok for some things but spotty for others. Has anyone filled the void?

Lots of pretenders but not as easy to navigate, well stocked or focused.

Our local high-end shop, Sound Investments in Glendale (Milwaukee), was a loss. Been quite a while now.

There was a neat shop on the way to or near Madison that I visited when I was in Milwaukee about a lifetime ago called Audio Illusions, had lots of great vintage gear and the owner was really into the stuff. Bought a nice little golden Bogen receiver there (think it was an RP60), for a fair price,

As an aside the owner of Audio Consultants collects watches and had good taste. We used to do a quick wrist check when I saw him. I can't remember what he had back then but in my mid-20's I was usually sporting a vintage 1960's Girard Perregaux Gyromatic, 1970's Omega f300 Constellation, or a 1970's Breitling Chronograph. Once he (half) joked about losing a bit of respect for non-watch wealthy people that wore Rolex Submariners. I remember him saying, "They could have picked anything, how unoriginal."

I'm more of a digital guy for music but do highly respect the GyroDec and VPI turntables. There are some impressive vinyl set ups out there but if the record it beat to heck they are still going to sound like junk. But when all of the planets align great vinyl is sublime. I have an old Thorens TD124 mark II with SME 3009 arm that needs to be restored, some day maybe. Just in a catch 22. Don't have enough good records to care about turntables but don't care about records because I don't have a good turntable. Right now my working turntable is a Project 1.2.

yeah, that IS a small world indeed!
I just looked at my folder from Audio Consultants -- the surviving one -- it has a name of John on it. Not sure if worked there at the same time as you did or not....
Still remember the store front with a green & white or black & white awning....

The Evanston store closed a few years ago when the owner retired, it was the last one. If it was John Fehr I never worked with him but bought some stuff from him after I left. Very knowledgeable and nice did a great job when he managed the Libertyville store. He now works at Quintessence Audio, another prestigious Chicago area store.

good to read that a knowledgeable & good SA like John found a position at a top audio store in Chicago-land.....

my folder just has "John" in blue ballpoint. He did not give/attach his biz card so I cannot say it was John Fehr but looks like it must be..... Maybe the only John in that store at that time?

It would probably depend on the time period but John F. was with them a long time. He started out as a salesman at Evanston when to Libertyville store then went back to Evanston.

Has anyone had any experience with Decware valve amps? I’m thinking of putting down a deposit for an SE84UFO. The online reviews are extremely positive and the price is right for my budget. Looks like the build time is about a year now though 🤔

Tonight visited a friend with a >$1,000,000 system and a >$1,000,000 vinyl collection

I state the figures because they make me feel universally reasonable in my tiny and inexpensive obsessions

the TechDAS Air Force 1 (with optical cartridge) pictured here is about to be replaced by a TechDAS Air Force Zero, “requiring” a complete revamp of this hardware wall:

I was visiting while he’s still attempting to organize and rationalize duplicates from his purchase of the entire Classic Records “#1” Archive ( the so-far organized portion below)
