Interesting. It’s a very highly regarded pre amp for the money. I was actually looking at the top of the line McIntosh unit, but decided spending 2k was overkill, although I still need a way to digitize my records, which it offered in addition to a mono mode. This according to the articles/reviews I read does everything I need it to. I did purchase a recommended tube upgrade from Amazon.
You can have a lot of fun with tube rolling in those. They take 12ax7’s so the options are plentiful and you can hear the differences in the tube box. My friend runs a pair of vintage Bugle boys in his- they match up well to his system.

I use a Music Hall USB turntable with a Grado Green cartridge hooked up to my laptop on which I'm running some version of Roxio Media Creator, but Audigy would work just as well. I record to WAV, burn to CD, and then rip to FLAC and MP3. (I like to have physical media backups just in case.) It works well for me.

My home built Scan-Speak floorstanders. Full output to 30 Hz in a modest footprint. Just upgraded to SB Beryllium tweeters!

Forgive my ignorance but that room looks like sound would bounce around it like a super-ball in a squash court, no?

Most definitely, it is a live room. I am going to put treatment on the ceiling and possibly behind the speakers. I have a ver live room at my office and I was successful at stopping the echo.

What kind of a treatment will you use?

Thanks for the tip. Will go this way eventually. I’d like some of my records to be on my I POD.

You could put up curtain rods and have patio-door sized curtains all across for listening and then pulled to the sides when not. Those thick energy-saving ones would do a decent job, I should think.

Maybe hang a small board to hide the rods and spot-lamps used for art?

As days roll by, my amazement at this pre amp increases. Yesterday, Days Of Future Passed” was rendered in a soundstage and rich detail, I’d never experienced before. Then I put on AJA …. It does seem to help to switch the unit on to warm for a bit prior to use. Guess thats SOP for tube gear.

Yup, I usually give my gear about 20 minutes at idle before I play anything, otherwise it usually sounds like shit. My ARC SP3 actually sounds defective for the first 10 minutes, then sounds compressed and tired for the next 20, then magically starts to open up.

By the second side of an album the speakers disappear. Considering it’s almost the same age I am, I understand- it takes me about 30 minutes to be any kind of functional in the morning.

Tube or solid state. Depending on the device, anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes until it stabilizes. Very common, and in fact when calibrating electronic equipment, it is specified in the procedures and must be obeyed if you want proper results.

Persian rugs.

Persian rugs are just the best sounding. I have one too since forever. Must be the knot structure suppressing sound wave reflections ……

This is the reason I never turn off my pre-amp, power amp & turntable power supply 👍

My Audible Illusions has a standby mode that is actually a slick feature- they make an awesome tube preamp for the money.

I have a Kinergeritics CD player from the early 90’s- although it only plays redbook CD’s, it’s an incredible sounding digital player with an audio section that would rival most high end solid state preamp- (full of Wima caps, looks similar to a Krell layout of the day).
It doesn’t have a power switch, hence was meant to be left on all the time. When I got it, the original owner had left it idling in his cabinet for 20 years (as it was meant to always be on) - it had burned out 2 resistors in that time and part of the LDC has gone dark. The resistors were an easy fix (if anyone has a vintage high end Philips/magnavox based dc player from the early days- a disc read error is NOT a bad laser as many have expounded on the web- it’s a specific .30c resistor in the transport that fails). Seeing as it kills me to see that thing burning away for months at a time when I’m not using it, I have it plugged into an old monster conditioner that has a switched outlet and just turn it in a few hours before I plan to use it.

So now I have unlimited record shopping time. It is called Daddy and Daughter bonding. My 15yr old wanted a turntable for Xmas and we obliged. My wife insisted it not being one of my homemade or restored turntables. 😲
Now we are exploring the record stores around town 😀 It got double as expensive…but that is a small price to pay. 😁

The days of a dollar a disk are long gone! But you'll find lots of LPs at the thrift stores.
