Atmos is something like one hundred and forty five speakers in your ceiling....

Okay, I am exaggerating. Not by much, though.
The only info on Dolby website is... it’s for headphones?

Then I looked on my phone instead of computer and you get a different website... that is very strange!

so you can test it out on their website and it wants you to choose headphones but also shows it in a car... I’m off to do more reading.

My TV and AMP are atmos always thought it was for headphones. I have a 7.2 system and apparently it does some virtual overhead speaker thing... apparently I need four speakers in my ceiling for the true atmos.
Everyone should ignore all my ramblings on this thread.

You near any place that hosts audio shows? There is one near me (DC area) in the fall -- the last one I attended (2 years ago?) had an Atmos setup. Start thinking 12 channel amps, etc.

Oh you remind me of when I used to go to the Consumer Electronics Show when it was still held in Chicago....

Is that the show that was held at the same time in the same venue as an adult entertainment show…?

Yes and no. There was an adult entertainment section that was part of the show.

Now playing Van Clinburn........Tchaikovsky P1

Oh goodie goodie goodie: the LS3/5A. I have the Rogers version (original): brilliant stuff👍
I'm using the Anthem Integrated one to drive them. Lovely sound created for tube amplifiers IMO, together with my Linn LP12, Densen phono pre-amp and PrimaLuna Proloque 8 I've got a set with very open sound. As the LS3/5A lack in low frequency I've added a KEF subwoofer recently. Still tuning though as the sound is still not exactly what I'm looking for.

Audiophiles were given that same line around 1982 when the CD came out......it's PERFECT!!! It measured great but sounded not so great. Technology has certainly improved in the digital age, but it's a brave, yet foolish, man who claims that a high bitrate recording will outperform a well prepared vinyl record. Use your ears, it's not always the case.
Don't forget that in the digital world the sinusses are topped (not sure if the wording is correct). Where in analogue sound the curve is more or less fluent. On high end equipment and with proper functioning hearing you will notice. It took me a long time to find a CD player that has the smoothness of vinyl, hence my PrimaLuna Prologue with tube stage.

Hi

we can take about what source sounds better .

No matter what it has to start with a good recording ..

once you have that all lossy or lossless will sound a lot better .

for example.

Odetta BLUES EVERYWHERE I GO
I remember buying the CD on Amazon at the time they allowed you to listen to a sample before purchase . I was shocked how good the sample sounded ! And it was mp3 .

go check it out ..

just a thought

best
Bill
I often use Daniel Lanois - Acadie as a reference CD. I just love the music, production, clean sound, openess! On the other hand the Neil Diamond 12 and 13 songs albums are also very well produced.

I just serviced and brought back to life my Sony TCD-D7 DAT (1990s technology) after many years out of service. Still no back light for the LCD but, I need a transformer for that which has not been available for many years. Will look for a modern equivalent. These are a very clever piece of kit and will record at 48 kHz (CD is 44.1 kHz) which was very good at the time. They can be temperamental as the transport is delicate...

Sitting here on a a different tape machine - analog and digital together and I think both media have their strengths.

On the GIGO front, I've noticed that digital (Sony) and analog (Nagra and Revox) will record my guitar and piano correctly but they seem to record my singing off key😒. My conclusion is that neither media records vocals correctly - any suggestions?😁.

Cheers, Chris

stop singing😎😗

I have a Stax DAC-Talent with upgrade. CD player is just a transport. D/A outboard is better.

I wasn’t looking, but it fell on my lap and broke my femur. Is a Fisher RS 2015, wouldn’t turn on(told). But I got it for a song, first no fuse or cap, then I inspected somehow the soldered end was about to fall off. Bypassed the fuse, is a live. I stop, researched found a 10a 250v holder and fuse. Should be here, in a day or two. Them the saga will continue.

My Fisher goes back a bit further a 500C 7591A Output Tubed Receiver. Bought off ebay and restored and recapped by me with the help of the guys on the Audioasylum Vintage forum. It's the core of my HiFi system and will have to be dragged from my dying hands. Superb sound. If you can get hold of one I suggest you grab it.

Haha, awesome I actually just hot a 500T I will get a B or C one of this days. Very hard to get one, at a reasonable price. But the two, I got were local buys, so I’m hoping. As I got it, works ok missing some knobs I already ordered some. Will do some other upgrades in time.

I had a Fischer 400 tube receiver in the Electronics Shop at University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Nice unit. 6V6 push-pull outlet, as I recall.

Harmon-Kardon also made some good stuff, and we already know about Marantz.

Hey, we have one of those! Got it from a widow; her husband had assembled a system in the late '60s/ early '70s that had stayed in their living room for many decades. I got it cleaned up a bit thanks to some recommendations from @Bill Sohne and @JwRosenthal , and set up a system for my son. But one channel went out after a while and I relegated it to the basement until I have more motivation and knowledge than I have right now.

Finally a year later, got around to setting up a proper stereo for my home office..just as we are starting to get back to going into work- albeit still on partial telecommute

Also took the opportunity to set one up in my wife’s office

Finally clearing some shelves in the basement of the accumulated gear that has just been sitting for a long time.

Nice office systems of you and your wife.

Similar work from home over the past 15 months have lead me to set up these 2 systems for my wife and my home offices. These are both connected to the main stereo so we can listen to vinyl, CDs, cassettes, Qobuz HiFi and other streaming as well.

My system is very vintage. The Fisher 500C dates from 1964 the Thorens 124 Mk II from 1965. The 12" Wooden tonearm is Modern. A unipivot design made in Cocobolo by a guy in New Zealand. That carries a Hana SL that feeds a pair of 60s Partridge Microphone transformers used as SUT.

Underneath is part of the modern part of the system A Raspberry Pi streaming music player USB connected to a Project Pre S2 DAC. In the middle an Optical mechanical switch taking Optical from PC and the Sony CD/SACD Player. Next to the Fisher is a SqueezeBoxTouch feeding Co-Ax to the DAC. Backend of this is an Open source Vortexbox music server running LMS and ripping CDs. LMS also provides support for streaming and worldwide Radio stations, Bandcamp etc.

In the background is a 5v linear supply I built from an ebay kit. Speakers are unusual Jordan Eikona full range drivers in concrete baffled cabinets.

We should take a poll on how many 124’s are among us- I account for 2.
