It's a deck that once you have got properly sorted you will never part from. Years after I got mine I used to read the HiFi mags and wonder if I should get the much raved about LP12. I'm so glad I didn't. Linn seems to have positioned the LP12s as a dealers pension scheme. A succession of increasingly eye watering cost upgrades to make it sound "better" The Thorens just rolls on exactly the same sounding really great.

I own an LP12 (in the pic of my office- now replaced with a Pioneer PL41). It goes in and out of systems but never really stays. I refuse to go down their upgrade path- agree- it’s like a never ending scam. But it’s a nice sounding table as is.
I always felt like Linn was the Rolex of hi-fi. Those that buy into the hype can’t be told otherwise- they believe they are the best tables on earth. I have a VPI HW-19 MkIV (full TNT upgrades) and it runs circles around my Linn….but you can’t tell a Linn fanatic that.

Also, McIntosh (pre-1984) made some of the best power amps out there, but couldn’t design a preamp to save their life (I own 3). How’s that for heresy! ::stirthepot::

I do like your Rolex analogy. Perhaps that's why we have so many Thorens owners here. Omega watch users prefer the precision of a Swiss made Thorens!

Hey, I resemble that remark!
Good sound is good sound, I don’t discriminate. Digital was awful until they figured it out in the early 00’s. I have 2 SACD players that are outstanding and an early tube driven Cal-labs which can go head to head with any vinyl rig. Non-lossy digital through a good DAC can best vinyl for sure- it just took a while to get there.

I agree with you about the sound quality of not just SACD but also well produced Red Book CD can get close to vinyl. All my CDs and also SACDs are ripped, saved on the server and played through a Raspberry Pi into my DAC. Quality difference between well produced CD,SACD and Vinyl is now pretty marginal.
But I have reached an age where my top end hearing is starting to fail so I am probably no longer the best judge.

I bought and modded an old Playstation 2 specifically to rip my SACD collection. As the players get older they get temperamental about reading SACD discs so having a backup is important as well as more convenient.

My system is very vintage. The Fisher 500C dates from 1964 the Thorens 124 Mk II from 1965. The 12" Wooden tonearm is Modern. A unipivot design made in Cocobolo by a guy in New Zealand. That carries a Hana SL that feeds a pair of 60s Partridge Microphone transformers used as SUT.

Underneath is part of the modern part of the system A Raspberry Pi streaming music player USB connected to a Project Pre S2 DAC. In the middle an Optical mechanical switch taking Optical from PC and the Sony CD/SACD Player. Next to the Fisher is a SqueezeBoxTouch feeding Co-Ax to the DAC. Backend of this is an Open source Vortexbox music server running LMS and ripping CDs. LMS also provides support for streaming and worldwide Radio stations, Bandcamp etc.

In the background is a 5v linear supply I built from an ebay kit. Speakers are unusual Jordan Eikona full range drivers in concrete baffled cabinets.
I'm actually interested on the backend to tie everything together. To get the vintage and modern together.

Brute force and ignorance. It's been the main system for 15 years now. Can't see myself ever needing to improve it. The Marantz pre-amp is a standby incase the Allnic croaks.

Do not agree: Revox resembles Rolex in HiFi.
Linn is just a crazy (but nice crazy to me) Scottish (should I say more) brand. Did own a Thorens for a short period of time. Sometimes I regret selling it. It’s like watches: you have to clean out in order to get something else😉

"I'm actually interested on the backend to tie everything together. To get the vintage and modern together."

Backend server is a Vortexbox server This is an implementation of Fedora Linux incorporating Logitech Media Server as a music server. It also includes a CD ripper program that is simplicity to use. Insert CD, it goes to the web to get track details, then rips the CD when its finished it spits out the CD and waits for another to be inserted. So it is easy to rip CDs whilst doing other jobs.
Vortexbox includes a web interface for administration elsewhere on your network so you have to know very little Linux. Also detects insertion of a USB drive and prompts you via the web interface to backup the system.

I run mine on a HP Microserver and it acts as house server for everything needing backup as well as music server. Best of all it's totally free open source software. Latest version is 2.5 Easiest to implement is version 2.4 then update to 2.5 I can assist you to implement it. To try it all you need is an old 64bit PC Get the software here:

2.4 to 2.5 upgrade path is detailed here, last post in thread.

Anyone been buying the new Japanese SACD remasters of classic albums? I recently got an SACD of Supertramp's Breakfast in America. It is a much better mix than the original. Less toppy and screechy and you can really hear the bass line and drums properly. Highly recommended.

I do not have an SACD compatible player, but I do own a small number of XRCDs, and they are superb. This one of Hank Mobley's Soul Station (• Mastered and produced by Alan Yoshida and Joe Harley from the original Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note 2-Track Analog Tapes) is especially recommended:

Just bought a Pi4 to run Picore player with Logitech Media Server. Previous Pi3 shares USB with USB based network connection. Pi4 has dedicated USB which I use to feed my Project DAC. Clear improvement in sound quality. Also downloaded a sample set of DSD 512 Files from Native DSD music. Sound quality is excellent. Will now choose which music to try. probably yet another Beethovens 9th. This really is true high res music unlike the Snake Oil MQA rubbish.

I got a marantz 1200b amp. No sound, a roommate deal (not mine). I already have producing sound, but I have to take the volume pot apart to see if it can be fixed. Need to find a few knobs. Then get dialed in perfect.

In general, they can't, that's usually the carbon track worn off. Best to put your time and effort into getting a replacement. Same for balance and possibly tone (don't know if it has a tone bypass).
