This stuff was big when I was growing up late 1970's to the1980's when in the Navy I did not have a lot of money so when station on Guam the Navy exchange was were you could buy fair priced stereo equipment I bought a piece at a time and sent it home to my moms house for when I got back to the states first the receiver next the speakers then the double cassette then the phonograph all Kenwood bought a piece every payday took about 6 months our postal clerk on ship tripped out on the size of the boxes the speakers were in kind of wish I still had it but lost in time over the years.

Just got another SONY TA-3200F. This power amplifier was produced from 1971 to 1976. Got it from a strog smoker and after a cleaning session I can say, never bevore I've seen such a nice original state.

I have a TA-3200F in its box in my storage unit, hasn't been used since about 1985. They were a powerful unit in the 1970's, 100 watts per channel. I had mine tested at a McIntosh Clinic in 1977, distortion was no higher than 0.06% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 100 watts per channel, and maximum power was 120 watts at 1,000 Hz.

My impression of the Sony was it had a bit of graininess to the sound compared to the Marantz 1060 I was using at the same time in a four channel setup which was the thing in the mid-70's. I'd be wary of those big caps, they are 45+ years old and may not be too stable now. I just pulled the information on my unit, I paid $369.50 in Dec. 1973, they were a pricey amp back then, equivalent to approx. $2,225 in 2021.

Your unit looks clean, have fun with it.

I guess it “qualifies “, been trying to get one for a resto-custom project. Buying one at a reasonable price, last year I got one but got destroyed in shipping. We’ll have matching tube amp and pre amp, all custom. So a year or so, before is all done.

Shipping is always the killer with turntables bacuase the guy shipping odesn't know how to package it properly. On one of the hi-fi forums a poster send a video of how to pack it to anyone he buys a turntable from. Reckons it has improved his score on survivors of shipping, but not 100% I think handlers see wrecking things as a way to amuse themselves in a pretty boring job.

How is everyone enjoying Apple Music lossless so far? Any members with Dolby Atmos speakers care to comment on spatial audio?

No Apple for me. I could not see giving my money to their corporate overlords, and watching people gain from the toiling of their underpaid workers. 😁

Seeing as you've opened this can of worms...
I trialed it as I normally use spotify and was still not overly impressed. It all depends on what you are listening to, how it was originally recorded and how you are listening to it. HARD WIRED to the AMP, yes the quality is better at the higher bit rate, as it is with Deezer (my previous subscription of choice) however all of these services are limited as soon as you go bluetooth or wireless the bit rate drops. With some music it makes no noticeable difference. For me it turned out I listen to music mainly in the garden and control the music I play from my iphone or ipad using the magic of radiation. I moved to spotfiy as I believe they handle music better (daily mixes and predicting what you will like is very good) and as a family the family subscriptions were better (I've been with them a few years now!). For me if I'm sitting down to listen to music properly, in an environment where I will notice the improvement in quality (i.e quiet, with a glass of something strong) then its about more than flicking through a subscription service. Choosing an album I want to listen to, getting it out the case, putting it on the system and then sitting back and enjoying the journey is a ritual and not just listening to music.
I tend to use music services when I want music in the back ground / party / distraction, CD's when I want to listen to music. Everyone is different though.

I am more interested in spatial audio, because lossless is snake oil territory unless you have great equipment and good ears! With films because I value quality, I will buy 4K when possible. Streaming services have very inferior PQ and plus content (unlike music) is scattered all over the place and making the cost prohibitive anyway! I don’t like CDs, and buying vinyls would be nice but then I could not afford watches anymore!

No, you need proper equipment, although my Sennheiser 600s pack a real punch with my dac/amp combo!

Brings back a lot of memories I had a D3 and did a lot of DATTrading.
I just serviced and brought back to life my Sony TCD-D7 DAT (1990s technology) after many years out of service. Still no back light for the LCD but, I need a transformer for that which has not been available for many years. Will look for a modern equivalent. These are a very clever piece of kit and will record at 48 kHz (CD is 44.1 kHz) which was very good at the time. They can be temperamental as the transport is delicate...

Sitting here on a a different tape machine - analog and digital together and I think both media have their strengths.

On the GIGO front, I've noticed that digital (Sony) and analog (Nagra and Revox) will record my guitar and piano correctly but they seem to record my singing off key😒. My conclusion is that neither media records vocals correctly - any suggestions?😁.

Cheers, Chris

Atmos is something like one hundred and forty five speakers in your ceiling....

Okay, I am exaggerating. Not by much, though.
