Enicar Sherpa Super Jet...40mm and pretty badass. Can find all day long under $3k.
Just took a gander at those, they are pretty slick. The list grows

Tudor Black Bay 58. 39mm, vintage aesthetic and around $3500 on a bracelet.

Yes the Tudor Black Bay is beautiful watch. This gets harder by the moment.

At Chrono24 one can see multiple examples of almost any watch mentioned. Is Chrono24 taboo in the watch buying world?

38mm isn't really a common vintage size. Except for chronographs, Omega topped out around 36mm.

For new, I'd look at an Aqua Terra. For used, I'd look at some Rolex OPs.

Op.... what's your definition of vintage please?

Op, so not necessarily vintage at all then? ::facepalm1::

Here's the answer: you haven't any real idea what you want so you're shopping on impulse. You're also gambling on the fairly low statistical possibility of one of the other members here coming up with a magic word which takes your fancy? This does not sound like a sensible way to spend $3-4k......

Taboo, no. But the prices and market are a bit distorted due to the higher fees involved, especially compared to a forum transaction.

Doubt I would buy at Chrono24, but it is a useful browsing method with vast quantity of brands and easy movement of brand, model, year, case diameter and so on

I was kinda thinking of a fairly long process, at least 15 minutes.

If you can stretch to 41mm, the heritage ranger makes a good choice.

Like this one, gleaned this off a past OF post. That is an option I would guess. Just would have to avoid any appearance of a redial so I don’t incur the wrath of some

Easier said than done.

That’s a horrible example. Hands are wrong, wrong, wrong. Crown is also incorrect.

Have doubts on the dial.

You should look for one like this:

Better read the whole thread:

Read the whole thread. My example showed up in the thread. I see the incorrect crown. One say the hands are wrong wrong wrong another says this is an example of what they should look like.
Life is confusing, Omegas even more

That is significantly smaller than 38mm. If you are looking for a 38+ mm vintage watch without complications, the vast majority (not all, but most) will be divers. The exceptions are often called "jumbo" or "oversize" references.

This one? Used, top of your range. Most all your criteria, except not stainless. It is titanium. (yes, I am selling mine some time soon).

So you want a vintage, except you might go modern instead. And you don't want complications, but you do want a date or day-date. Not sure how to help you.
